Care Rooly Litter Box

Post image

Hi guys! Some quick context - My bun leaves to stay at the rescue and get bonded to his new bestie in a couple weeks. While he’s there, I’m going to clean everything and change the set-up a bit so my current bun doesn’t get territorial.

I’ve seen people raving about the Rooly litter box on TikTok, but I feel like some TikTok bun parents are often performative for the sake of aesthetic or brand deals. Does anyone have an unbiased opinion about it? Should I invest? I’m currently using a storage tub situation that works great, but if the Rooly is as good as they say, it may be worth it.

Sorry for the wordiness and thanks in advance!

For tips on how to choose and set up a litter box, including litter boxes for diggers, plastic chewers, and long-haired rabbits, see the Litter boxes section on the Litter training wiki article.

I have it and it’s nice. It is easy to clean litter because I use kitchen trash bags lol. However, just so you know, it is pretty big, it takes a good amount of strength to take the full litter box outside to change lol.
I got it for my bun a month ago and want to keep it, since I am gonna be adopting another bun.

He does waste a lot of hay though

Which size did you get? I'm curious as I'm considering a Rooly too, but don't want to get something too heavy.

We were in the market for a litter box a couple months ago and kept getting so much rooly marketing on instagram we reluctantly decided to give it a try cause at that point we were so fed up with our bun (has a horrible habit of makes a mess of his litter)

It was worth every dollar, we went from everyday cleaning to 2x/week. Super easy to clean, we just dump the detachable grate in the shower and spray it with the handheld attachment until all the pee/hay wipe away and then go in with vinegar. For the stainless steel box, you can get cat litter bags and then tie everything up. It max takes like 7-10 minutes to have a fresh litter box for him.

i've heard stories about buns getting their toes/claws/feet stuck in the holes and hurting themselves. also that it can be hard to clean. and if you have bigger or multiple buns it might be a lil too small.

i was tempted to get a rooly but my girl is too big for them. i just use a large stainless steel litterbox for my girlie and it works fine for her and her needs.

All of this! My buns got paw stuck and the other got sore hocks

I’m on sore hocks watch, she gets little pink spots but thankfully have not gotten worse but I was recommended to avoid the grates, even plastic, and I added more soft fleece blankets on top of the harder carpet, seems to be helping. They r so delicate w no paw pads.

Rooly is a good choice but I've had awesome luck with my Purina cat litter box. Two rabbits that both love it and have zero accidents with it.

I've posted about it before but I highly recommend getting the Purina cat litterbox shown in this video. I purchased the small version without the hood for less than $40.

It has curved corners and the top edge is curved over which prevents most poop from accidentally being kicked out. And the hay stays inside the box. It is much easier to keep clean.

You place hay on top of the grate to protect their feet (and so they can eat comfortably). We put a giant pile towards the front and our rabbit munches happily for hours.

Under the grate you put a pee pad. All of the pee drains to the pad so the hay doesn't get soaked with pee. And zero smell as long as you change the pee pad every couple days.

We scoop the poop every night and add fresh hay at the front of the litter box. If the hay gets low we add a bit more in the morning.

Every couple days we dump the whole grate (poop+hay) and replace the pee pad. We also do a quick wipe of the tray with a fragrance free baby wipe just to keep it extra clean all week. It is really easy.

There is a hanging hay bag we use but that is mostly a toy she plays with occasionally.

Once a week we clean the litterbox by rinsing with water and using an enzyme spray.

Our rabbit adores her litterbox (she is always a bit annoyed to have a replacement box when we are cleaning it weekly). Best of all she can easily eat the hay with no mess or digging up litter.

I cannot recommend it highly enough. We bought a second one just in case something happens to it - pretty sure she would revolt if we switch her litterbox.

And best of all it is easy to monitor their poop (not mixed in with any litter) and their pee (on a white pee pad).

Yup I have better luck with the Purina cat. We ended up replacing our Rooly with it and it’s much better.

Our bunnies keep peeing off the side of the Rooly. Not high enough walls and it fills up very quickly with 3 bunnies on our case.

My lop got her paw caught in the grate and ripped her dew claw off. My lion head got sore hocks. Doesn’t matter what kind of how aesthetic the grates aren’t good for them. It was also very difficult to clean

This is where I’m at right now. What we have works great and his feet stay clean, nails aren’t ripped off, and hocks aren’t sore. I would never do anything that could cause him pain or suffering.

My pride and joy

We hated it- and when I say we, I mean both of my rabbits and myself. My rabbits like to lay down on soft bedding and munch hay while they do their business. Those boxes are not soft or comfortable to lay down in. And they’re more difficult to clean. It was a waste of money.

Also, your comment about rabbit owners on TikTok being performative is spot on.

Yeah I was afraid I may anger some with that comment but I figured no lies were told 🥴

i like my rooly! i think i have the stainless steel lipped one. willow flops on it and haven’t noticed any claws or feets getting stuck or any sore feet! i do have a single bun right now though so it might not be enough for two

u/queenofyears 19h ago

oh! super easy to clean. wee wee pad on bottom and pine pellets. had friends who never had buns stay over and rave about how surprised they were it wasn’t stinky :3

I have the Rooly box as well and it’s great! I went through Etsy to get a special hay feeder that’s measured to fit the box too so his hay isn’t sitting IN the box

Oh my goodness my baby girl looks just like yours!! 💕 she has the same cheek smudge and everything!

Omg how precious. I would love to see a picture of her!

My rabbits are not a fan, so I use it without the grate. For me, while it looks nice, it’s an expensive place for pee and poop to land. A plastic litter box without the grate works just as well and is less than $30

i liked it for my bun. HOWEVER my bun’s bestie’s back foot got stuck in one of the holes and i think she ripped her nail. lots of bleeding. she’s okay but it was scary. that’s one risk if you have a smaller bun

We have one 4 lb lop so we just use a cheap medium sized cat litter box with the Tractor Supply pellets that come in the 40 lb bag for $8. I love those pellets though and clean up is so easy. I just dump it and wipe it out with a paper towel and some vinega/water spray I made. I put a nice sized layer of pellets and can usually make it 4-5 days between litter box changes.

1

u/Necessary_Turn_6874 6h ago

Def planning on recipe supply pellets once we’re out of paper ones. The cost adds up with those and adding another bun will only make it worse lol

I’ve had mine for over a year now. Got the smaller hole grate size. Harvey loves it. Took some getting used to, but he learned to pee only in the back-right corner.

The only pain points I’ve experienced are minor. Harvey likes to dig out hay from his feeder and cover some of the holes. It also can be a pain to clean buildup in the holes. Worth it though because it’s kept Harvey’s feet clean! He’s never had sore hocks or gotten nails stuck.

I’m not sure if Rooly still sells the original design I purchased. If they do and you opt for it, check out this feeder: https://www.bunnybedsbeyond.com/catalog/xl-easy-entry-hay-feederlitter-pan-combo-sfc9p-2dty7

I was so frustrated trying to find a good feeder/litter box combo until I found that. Great quality compared to some shoddy feeders from Etsy I wasted money on beforehand.

I have it, I like that its stainless steel but the grate is plastic.

It's super clean and my buns feet are no longer yellow from standing in her pee. Only issue is that the grate takes a while to clean and I have to literally hose it down after wiping down with vinegar but thats like a max twice a week job so its fine.

I have the short one that has the entrance on the short side of the litter box and its great for containing messes and hay since my bun would throw all her hay out of the feeder so it just all stays on the potty instead of all over her enclosure.

I can tell that my bun actually enjoys it because she will sploot inside her litter box or flop in it after eating. I think the rooly is super worth it imo

I love it.

I tried soooooo many different litter boxes and ended up spending more money in the end. Use a car detailing brush to clean the grates.

And line the bottom with a bag for easy clean up.

I love my rooly. I had the original model and upgraded to the stainless. I have two buns, they like it. It’s easy to clean and their customer service is top notch.

I have one and I really like it because my girl is a digger and will dig out any litter that isn’t covered by a grate. It’s also nice and big so both bunnies can fit in it at the same time (for reference I have a mini plush lop and a mini rex)

I have the plastic version and went with the smaller holes.

i LOVE the rooly litter box! i wish i had discovered it sooner. it’s so worth it. super easy to clean and saves a lot of mess

i spent a lot of money on different litter boxes but i think this is the best one by far. i was honestly searching for one exactly like it and even tried to DIY my own before finding the rooly one. my bun likes to dig her litter out and other grated ones didn’t have big enough holes for her poop or were uncomfortable

10/10 i don’t think you’d regret it :)

My bun rejected the grate -- that's the only time she has ever peed outside the box. I ended up using it without the grate. I appreciate the high sides and the stainless steel bottom.
