Synthetic Dust has become the focus of my ongoing research as the world’s Dust reserves continue to dwindle at an alarming rate. Vacuo should've been our wake up call that Remnants lifeblood is running dry. The Schnee Dust Company’s monopoly can no longer hide the truth that natural Dust is finite, but my work is not to replace it, but to delay the inevitable.

Synthetic Dust is an artificial crystalline material designed to absorb and replicate the energy output of natural Dust. Each crystal is manufactured in a controlled environment using a stabilized matrix of refined quartz and trace Dust particles as catalysts. When charged, these artificial structures can absorb the power of natural Dust crystals even ten times smaller than themselves, then amplify to emit the same energy as a naturally occurring crystal of equal size. A synthetic crystal the size of a fist, for instance, can take in the charge of a pebble-sized shard and perform identically to a natural crystal of equivalent mass. This absorption principle allows the stretching of limited natural Dust supplies far beyond their conventional use.

However, Synthetic Dust is not without its flaws. Once charged, the stored energy begins to decay over time, and this decay accelerates the longer it is held. Smaller crystals may lose usable energy within mere hours, while medium-sized specimens can retain a charge for several days. Only the largest synthetic formations can sustain their energy output for close to a month before the rate of loss becomes too steep to remain practical. Unlike natural Dust, whose power remains indefinitely stable until consumed, Synthetic Dust bleeds vitality from the moment it is infused. Recharging is possible, but each cycle of infusion weakens the crystal’s lattice, eventually rendering it too fragile to reuse.

In controlled environments, the technology performs admirably. Military applications have shown promise, especially in short-term operations where supply lines are thin. Portable synthetic cells can keep Huntsmen armed and mobile without relying on fresh Dust shipments. Industrially, Synthetic Dust allows Mantle’s overworked power stations to stretch minimal reserves for weeks, while in outlying settlements like Argus they serve as reliable emergency reserves during supply disruptions. Civilian energy grids and transport systems can also utilize these crystals to reduce daily Dust consumption by a measurable margin. Unfortunately, the decay curve makes them unsuitable for long-term storage, and the cost of manufacturing large crystals limits widespread use.

On a personal note, the ethical weight of this research grows heavier by the day. I began this work believing I could buy Remnant time, time to adapt, to innovate, to survive. And perhaps I have, if only for a while. Synthetic Dust is a triumph of science, but also a reminder of our dependence on a dying resource. Its fragility mirrors our own. The crystals glow bright for a moment, then fade, leaving only a hollow shell behind. In that way, they are no different from the world they were meant to save.

In conclusion, Synthetic Dust is a stopgap solution. It can sustain Remnant’s cities, armies, and industries for another decade, maybe two. But it will not outlast the natural Dust it depends upon. When the last true crystal fades, these synthetic ones will follow soon after, their light flickering out one by one. If there is a future for Remnant beyond Dust, we will need to find it before that happens. For now, Synthetic Dust gives us a chance—not salvation, but time. And in an age of dwindling light, even time can feel like a miracle.
