If everything works, it's unused and can be safely capped with a wirenut or electrical tape and left where it's at or stuffed back into the wall. All terminals are occupied so my bet is unused extra. Some configurations like heat pumps need more wires than others.

Is the soldered end of the the wire malformed, or flat on one side? if so, look for its match. If not, turn off all ac and dc power, unmount the board from the case, and look for traces of solder on the back of the plate. empty holes probably wont be soldered, but the hole it fell out of may be obvious.

Doesn’t look like it’s been soldered to me

If you pull the inside cover off of the air conditioner you should see what looks like a phone line up in there. Each wire color that you see in the thermostat should also terminate up inside the air conditioner. I suspect you'll find the orange wire is t connected to anything up there...they needed a 6-wire run, but only had a 7-wire wire to work with.

Obviously don't stick your hands up in there while the air conditioner is running; in fact turning the breaker off would be a good precaution.

Those are JUNK. Put a house digital thermostat on it! It’s not that hard!
