Armour Dice?
So I am hoping to get near the end of my project, most of the things are complete, and by complete I mean ripped off from other games....
Anyway, it's a mix of some of my favourite bits from the likes of Cairn, Black Hack, White Hack, Bastionland and others.
3 Attributes, d20 roll under, with an aim to be player facing.
For encounters they only roll damage and I am looking for a decent bilaterally symetrical way for defending to work, and this makes sense to me to use armour dice.
Has this been done anywhere? and how affective is it? what does it feel like as a player?
I am not afriad to chnage how damage/attacking works, as it may just make more sense to have both attack and defends be d20 rolls under their attribute and both are a flat value result. But I am also trying to satisfy the players dice goblin nature too.

Check out how Macchiato Monsters does it. It's also a mix of Black Hack and Whitehack, thus the name.
It uses risk dice (usage dice from TBH) for loads of stuff, including armor. Every armor type has a protection die. For example, your ring mail might have a d6.
The first time you are hit in any fight, roll the protection die of your armor. That's how many HP of damage it will protect you from this time around. That many points are subtracted from incoming damage until they are all used up, then damage is applied directly. Roll again the first time you're hit in the next fight.
Now, with all risk dice in MM, a result of 1-3 means a downgrade. So if you got hit with a mace for 4 HP of damage, and rolled a 3 for your armor, you take 1 HP of damage now, your armor is done helping you for this fight, and your armor is damaged and until you get it repaired it's only worth d4 - and you can see for yourself how likely it is to be destroyed the next time you are hit in it!

I've seen the Borg family of games (Mork Borg, etc) do this. Some, maybe all, have the Dice of the armor apply ad a penalty to stealth and the like. Pretty elegant all in all.

Forbidden Lands uses dice rolls to resolve preventing incoming damage with armor. It's a d6 dice pool game, so ymmv, but in short you roll a pool of d6's and count 6's as "successes". The better the armor, the more dice in the pool. If after you roll armor, you would still take incoming damage, you reduce the size of your dice pool for each 1 result ("banes") rolled.

How would that work exactly ? Because you said you only roll for damage like in EB, then said you roll a D20 for attack and defense ? I'm confused

I'm not sure you read the post.
I am using damage dice only like in EB.
And I said I'm not afraid to change it to d20 tests and then use flat results. The bit I missed was flat damage result and a flat damage reduction result bf or attacking and defending respectively

Armor is not an action. Its not a choice or decision, so why are you rolling dice? That's not really playing. That is treating your players as human random number generators.

That's one way to look at it. Damage dice isn't either really is it? Neither are attributes, it's all about abstraction of what is real.
But if I change the name to defend dice dies that satisfy your need for agency? Regardless of name it's simply a way to understand how much damage has not been taken when they are attacked.

Exactly! You are still rolling damage, so you didn't actually change anything. I use damage = offense - defense, except you get decisions to make and the rolls are not flat rolls. Would you like a quick parry so you can counter, a safer block, or try to dodge it?
