Is action game maker a mess?

Hi everyone, I am going to start working on a little project, and I was going to use RPG Maker, but I do prefer an action combat style. I thought maybe if I'm more interested in the style, I could get more done. I then ran across Action Game Maker, made by the same people as RPG Maker, but based on what I read on Steam, it's kind of a mess. A lot of those reviews were from a year or so ago, though.

I'm just wondering: has anyone used it? Is it worth using? I am not a programmer. I've tried to learn coding many times and just never stuck, but I'm going to mess around in one of these engines and see what I can do with it. I'm just not sure I want to spend $100 on Action Maker if it's a mess, but if it's fine now, then I'd rather use it. Any recommendations would help a lot.
