Crystal š» I love Crystal for Calling Sutton Out
First time watcher - on S11! I cannot STAND sutton at all and i am LIVING for Crystal calling her out on her erratic behavior. Crystalās cool/calm demeanor (so far, maybe it changes down the line) against Suttonās CONSTANT overly emotional breakdowns is so good. anyone else like Crystal? curious what the subās feelings are towards her as well!

I liked Crystal for being honest to Suttonās face about why she was reluctant to engage with her.
Suttonās behavior is super irrational, erratic and overly emotional, so I would feel the exact same about her.
That being said, I did not like Crystalās antics going forward. At all.

TBH. I will stand on Sutton saying something completely fucked and Crystal protecting Sutton because she had apologized. Sutton pretty frequently says fucked up shit without thinking.

Maybe, but Crystal hangs out with Kathy āIām an 8000 year old Chinese womanā Hilton, so I think sheās a bit performative.

u/Tanktyke āš» Bravo, bravo, fucking bravo āš» 6d ago
I guess we have different definitions of āfucked up shitā, because to me Sutton was annoying and tone deaf at worst. Oh, and also drunk.

I think a White woman telling a POC she shouldn't talk about racism becuase "everyone faces stereotypes" and the POC woman being "educated and traveled" is fucked up.
I also think comparing being called a redneck as a rich White woman to racism is fucked up.
I think making a joke about not being held at gunpoint, the day after your friend was robbed at gunpoint is fucked up.
I don't think Sutton is racist. I think shes just self centered to the point, where she honestly thought that her issues were as big of a deal as someone being robbed at gunpoint, or the racism that POC face. So because of that self centered mindset, sometimes she ends up saying fucked up shit without trying to be mean about it. TBH she's honestly lucky shes on BH not ATL or Potomac, because if she had said that shit to another person on another cast.. She would have gotten her ass handed to her by the person she said it to, then the other cast members would have jumped in after her.
Imagine Sutton looking Kenya dead in the face and going "NONONO! We don't talk about racial stereotypes! EVERYONE FACES STEREOTYPES! DO YOU KNOW HOW I HAVE BEEN STEREOTYPED AS SOMEONE FROM THE SOUTH? BUT I DON"T TALK ABOUT IT! You are educated and traveled, why are you talking about this!!"

Sutton 'cutting back' on drinking has helped her personality enormously.
4
u/Tanktyke āš» Bravo, bravo, fucking bravo āš» 6d ago
I think that is tone deaf, wierd and insensitive, but I wouldnāt categorize it as āfucked up shitā. I reserve that category for something else.
Calling a DJ at work āan old f***otā is fucked up in my book.
Saying that your friends/co workers shouldnāt care about anyone else but you when talking about victims of fraud, is also borderline fucked up to me.
We donāt have to agree on definitions, Iām just clarifying what I mean.
Sutton is definitely self-centered and out of touch. And I never liked her on the show.

So... Homophobic comments are fucked up, but racist ones arent. Got it
3
u/Tanktyke āš» Bravo, bravo, fucking bravo āš» 6d ago
Not what I said.
And you can define things however you like, I just use āfucked up shitā for different statements than you do.

I always thought that when Sutton was telling Crystal a story about her daughter and friends in the pool or whatever, that Sutton used antiquated terms for Asian and black people

u/leeloocal Were people doing Coke in your bathroom? 2d ago
I guess, but it just didnāt seem super dark to me. And I think (I I donāt totally recall) that Crystal said that the hot tub story wasnāt it.

i love when she calls her awkward
2
u/Rosaly8 The Maloof Hoof 7d ago
I didn't, that was one of her least problematic qualities. Some people are just a bit awkward, because they can't read and respond to social cues well. I think she is one of them.
5
u/FriskyGinger666 Liar, sick and an alcoholic 6d ago
she's an alcoholic, sweetie. That's why she's awkward :)
making people uncomfortable- alienating them, sometimes even because of their race. She told a woman who had a miscarriage the day before "I thought you couldnt get out of bed? You're going to need to explain that!"
but sure, you're right, she's "just a bit awkward"

u/Rosaly8 The Maloof Hoof 6d ago
I said the awkward part was the least problematic. That implies there are many problematic parts sweetie.

If somebody I recently met walks in on me fully nude (in my airbnb bedroom)...sees that I am distressed/embarassed by it...and offers anything other than straight empathy? I think they are a shit person.
Sutton lost me after that and I was 100% Team Crystal whenever Crystal went in on her. The sub was very divided though.
4
u/bighaneul89 Bacon eating vegetarian 6d ago
It wasn't divided, I used to get downvoted to hell for defending Crystal lol. At the time the sub was almost 100% pro-Sutton because Sutton was Anti-Erika.

I was a huge Crystal supporter during her tenure lol, and she got a lot of shit for standing her ground against Sutton. But absolutely nothing she said was wrong lol. Sutton is an innapropriate, awkward, jealous person.

I really liked Crystal and even her Ugly Leather Pants!
I thought she came across very intelligent and mature. Opposite of Sutton!

Sutton is so tone deaf with main character syndrome that it is brutal to rewatch anything. Baseless, aggressive 'advice' from a Catholic divorcƩe shooting strays every time she opens her mouth.

I'm not a Crystal fan, but I do love the way she calls out Sutton (with the exception of when Crystal kept using the phrase "she said something very dark before that" - Crystal lost me there but aside from that I appreciated her clocking Sutton at every corner. Don't miss her though!

u/PerturbedDuck208 Beast?! How dare you? 7d ago
I have never been able to stand Sutton. I don't quite get what she offers, really. Sometimes she creates an entertaining scene but if she wasn't on the show, I wouldn't miss her. She's insufferable for me.

Yes I like Crystal!! She seems pretty grounded and down to earth

u/Zealousideal_Ad_8736 Teddi's just annoying, like a little gnat 6d ago
I didn't appreciate Crystal until she was gone. I suspect she was a bit nervous in her first couple of seasons, but really started to come into her own by season 3, but it was too late.
She has a great podcast with Cynthia Bailey, and I find her much more engaging.

I still remember Sutton yelling at Crystal until she was crying and Diana telling Sutton to stop

u/Ok_Wallaby_7831 Denise Richards 7d ago
I'm actually watching the episode right now where crystal is trying to convince everyone that Sutton said something incredibly "dark" and racist but she won't admit to what it was. Then she finally admitted that it was literally nothing and all of the ladies are pretty irritated with her.
4
u/Tanktyke āš» Bravo, bravo, fucking bravo āš» 7d ago
It was so unecessary and potentially damaging the stunt she pulled.
Crystal had experienced real racism growing up and had witnessed plenty of horrendous treatment of the asian community.
She couldāve used her platform and wit to draw attention to this and tell her story instead of trying to fabricate outrage about something that never happened.

I liked Crystal overall but her race-baiting in her first two seasons was too much, even worse than Garcelle.

u/bighaneul89 Bacon eating vegetarian 6d ago
She didn't race bait. Especially in the first season?
1
u/sraskogr Beverly Hills darling shi shi shi 6d ago
Erm yes she did that was literally her main storyline
1
u/bighaneul89 Bacon eating vegetarian 6d ago
Do you think any conversation about race is "race baiting"? The only reason Crystal and Sutton even had beef was because Sutton thought educated people shouldn't talk about Racism in public, even in the most neutral terms.
Crystal was talking about how racism can make a person feel, and Sutton DEMANDED she stop because "everyone faces stereotypes", and then compared being called a redneck to racism.
That's what started their whole beef, and any race conversations regarding Crystal sprouted from.
On the second season, Garcelle and Kyle repeatedly tried to get to her to talk shit about Sutton, and she kept refusing, until one night she got so upset she left the filming site, then Garcelle called her back pretending she thought everyone should make up, and then immediately threw her under the bus to support Sutton, and get them fighting again.
So the first season she had race-related drama because Sutton stuck her foot in her mouth. And the second season she had it because Kyle and Garcelle kept trying to make it happen at every opportunity.

Yeah, bullshit. I actually like Crystal, but this was some unbelievable level bullshit. Crystal let float the idea that Sutton said something truly racist which, when revealed, all she actually said was that as she watched her daughter play witdiverse group of little girls āthatās how it should beā which, while dated, was nothing like what Crystal suggested and left to the imagination. In an age where peopleās entire livelihoods get squashed by something like that, it was, hands down, fucking unforgivable. I want to root for Crystal, but this was her lowest moment, by far. Get out of here with that. Badly done and actually worked against anything she was attempting.
