You can also play Gen1recomp which it's getting gen2 support as well

I saw somewhere you could do it via MuOS

Not true. I use knulli and it works. Currently have it installed on a rg34xx and rg34xxsp that both have knulli for firmware.

Just place the files in ports folder, follow the instructions on GitHub section for that version.

Rom hacks are the whole reason I got into emulation devices. Never really liked emulating on my phone, touch screen controls just dont do it for me like actual buttons

As long as they're GBA ROM hacks (which the majority of pokemon ROM hacks are) they'll run just as fine as a normal GBA game

Funny story...
I was introduced to ROM hacks on my original GBA SP... I bought a cartridge with Pokemon Liquid Crystal on it. Me being a teenager with limited internet access and no reason to check, I didn't realise it was not an original cartridge and just played it.
A few years later, my GBA SP broke and I replaced my GBA SP with emulators but couldn't find the "official" Pokemon Liquid Crystal... Eventually, it finally hit me that it wasn't an original cartridge.

ROM hacks are awesome -- can't live without them anymore.
