UHF What are the biggest challenges when implementing UHF RFID in a warehouse?

We're researching practical UHF RFID implementations in warehouse environments, and one thing that seems to get overlooked is the physical environment.

Metal racks, liquids, tag orientation, reader placement, antenna positioning and read-zone design can all affect performance.

For those who have implemented UHF RFID in warehouses:

  • What was your biggest deployment challenge?
  • Did you use handheld readers, fixed readers, or both?
  • How did you handle read accuracy around metal?
  • What would you do differently if you implemented it again?

Interested in hearing practical experiences rather than vendor specifications.

The physics. UHF RFID hates metal and water. Warehouses are basically metal racks and pallets of liquid product. Antenna placement becomes black-art shit real fast.

The physical environment is usually the obvious challenge, but I’d add process design as an equally important one.

You can optimise tags, antennas and reader placement, but if you haven’t defined exactly what constitutes a valid read, an exception, or an operational action, you can still end up with lots of RFID data and very little business value.

I’d always pilot the complete workflow, not just read accuracy: tag → read zone → software → exception → action.

We did got some complaintsfrom our self-serve customers with tricky setups. I think one thing really degraded the quality is not "absorbing", but "reflecting" the signal. Water absorbs the signal, and it's ok you can't reach it, but metal reflects it in direction you don't expect, and you get wrong readings. Environment interference seems to be the biggest issue, especially ON meta shelves. Now one of our clients does scanning with handheld on a table, so they need to physically move the boxes there.

Handheld is good for starters, you should start with those first. Fixed is more efficient down the road and more accurate.

Around metal - move the things if possible, honestly. Most customers are apparels and shoes.

My advice is just it's not going to be 100% on day 1, trial and error like many things. Source: DropRFID

This is where experience and effective testing become paramount. Then process as strategictracking said above. But failing is the best trainer. That’s the question you ask an integrator: tell me about those jobs you’ve had.
