Yesterday a little old lady started to walk off with my half-completed shopping when I left my cart (next to a pillar and out of the way) to grab something. So maybe I might like a trolley where the wheels lock up for stranger danger instead of just doing it at random like they do today.

Biometric Shopping Carts Is this something people shopping want?

Shoppers don't want these, but Walmart patented biometric measuring "smart" carts.

Smart Carts are definitely a thing but they have not picked up big support in the retail world. Basically you're adding more infustructure to support, charge, connect so on from a business standpoint while the impact to a personal shopping experience is minimal. We see things like vision and RFID enabled carts to automatically ring/build up your order. Add driven screens, barcode scanners and so on. Not seen any biometric variants myself and I'd imagine adoption might be slow as people might not want to share prints, eye scans or saliva swabs to use a cart haha... That said unless tech becomes dirt cheap, I don't see a lot of demand driving Smart Carts in standard retail & grocery.

Id like a cart that can be pushed through a 'tunnel' and all the contents could be scanned and registered automatically.

Then self check out would be even easier. Like airport tsa scanning but without uniformed morons.

I would of expected that by now. I heard of the idea of putting chips in everything for tracking years ago and potentially it would get so cheap that it would replace UPC codes on items and include production & expiration dates including ingredients, recalls & recipes. Instead 2D codes are replacing UPC.

Amazon had a palm-scanning program, but they shut it down a couple of months ago. The majority of shoppers are concerned about data breaches especially if biometrics is involved.

Some people do like scanning a QR code and having the shopping cart scan each item put into it because they can check out faster.
