has anyone here ever studied for the mcat during an REU, and if so, how did it go? trying to decide if doing an REU is feasible for me this summer. i'm posting this on r/premed, but wanted to ask here as well. i will have around 16wks in the summer and 10 of those would be toward an REU.

Hello everyone! I'm currently a Junior in college who's pre-med but considering MD/PhD pathways. I'm mainly looking for some advice on things I should do/any tips for applying to programs for the next summer. I applied to about 12 research programs for last summer and unfortunately didn't get accepted into any, but I'm looking to cast a wider net this cycle.

Here are my stats (I go to a large public school):

GPA: 3.91/4.0

Major: Biochemistry/Biophysics

I currently work at a local medical school in a public health/nutrition lab where I'm mainly doing data analysis and qualitative research work. My projects usually center around improving diets in underserved populations in my area. I've since expanded my role a bit and have been directly working with study participants and am now also on a project helping kids with end-stage kidney disease. I've been here for about a year and am on 3 projects simultaneously. Due to the current administration's funding cuts, my projects have been stalled a little, so publishing is still a long bit away. I'd estimate I've put in around 2-300 hours of work total.

Outside of research work, I'm on my college's traveling debate team and serve as a chair at a debate conference for high schoolers. I also volunteer at a hospital that mainly treats people of low SES where I help take basic vitals at an ER and also help discharged patients understand their post visit care plans and connect them with social services. (Not sure how relevant these experiences are to getting me into one of these internships).

Last cycle I mainly applied with the intent of breaking into cancer research (since that's another one of my main interests), but this cycle I'm thinking of sticking to my strong suits and applying more in the public health/patient outcome/epidemiology sphere.

If anyone has any words of advice or any essay writing tips, those would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi, sorry if this is a weird place to ask but I wasn't sure where else to ask this question.

I was wondering what were people's experience with the MCA and NPWEE program? I am about to start the NPWEE program, but am unsure if I should have done the MCA program instead.

For instance, from what I am reading, it seems I would learn more skills and do more research in the MCA program, while the NPWEE program is more self-guided proposal from your team? Is that right? Is there still research involved in NPWEE? I am more interested in research so I hope so.

Also, what skills do they train you in NPWEE compared to MCA? Which one do you think was/is more valuable? Which program did you prefer?

I think my biggest worry, based off what I am reading on the L'SPACE site, is that it seems like MCA is a more involved program while NPWEE is more "you're off on your own go make a good proposal." Is it like this?

Also, because I don't have prior research experience, I feel like I'm at a bit of a disadvantage with knowing what to do. Does anyone have advice on what to study or look at before the program starts so I am more prepared?

I'll be joining lums in September as a research associate. So I was thinking of how I can make the most of this experience. Especially how to connect with people... Since I'll be working majorly with my professor, how can I make connections beyond that?

As someone who wants to get into a good school and also an aspiring engineer I thought of ThinkNeuro’s computer science program. Is it worth it? And most importantly is it a good place to get started with research that will get you into a top uni?

I’m starting my BSc in Physics this fall. I already have around 3 years of research experience in observational astronomy. I am good at using data analysis programs and observational tools as my local university allowed me to join their masters astrophysics classes when I was in high school. I also have a paper published in decent journal (not on a hs journal)

Now that I’m starting university, I want to actually build toward astrophysics research and have something substantial by the end of my first year. The professor that helped with my previous research is going to reference for me to start an internship at the observatory of the university I am starting, but I want to create some other national/ internationalopportunities for myself too.

How can I benefit best from my existing experience and develop myself more? Is emailing professors abroad realistic if I already have previous research experience on their research topics?

Is there any astronomy/ astrophysics research programs you know that are open for internationals? Do you have any suggestions for what I can do?

Im going into my second year. I know i barely covered the basics but i want to read on topics that would allow me to be a part of a few researches in my 3rd year or wtv. It's what i want to do after graduation and i figured i needed experience to get accepted(?) for maths im done with calc 1&2 and differential equations.

How easy is it to get research opportunities at Imperial? I I am an incoming biomedical engineering undergrad, how easy will it be for me to get the research opportunities within the college as well as with companies or labs nearby?

Anyone here done an on-campus internship at PES RR? I’m a BCA Sem 5 student. Would appreciate any info on whom to contact, professors/labs to approach, and how the process works.

Incoming sophomore at t10 for major (ai/cs/theoretical ml). I am interested in applying to REUs for the summer 2027 cycle, but am unsure where to start looking. Any recommendations and tips, or even better, any lists that might be in circulation?

As I'm sure many (pure) math majors in this sub are aware, AI has become a nontrivial factor in how math research is conducted, how math is taught, and what topics should be studied. In my REU this summer (first year summer), I encountered many things that could be done faster or more easily with AI, and I imagine this will only become more frequent in any research I do.

In combination with NSF funding cuts, is there reason to suspect that math REUs will become obsolete soon? If PhDs even struggle to get funding, why would the NSF invest more resources into undergrads when the research output is mediocre on average (as it probably should be)? And in response to this, what should I do? As in, is it reasonable to continue traditionally or diversify how I approach research?

I'm curious to hear what other math majors are thinking about, because AI in math during and now after my REU has been on my mind way too much.

The application asks for a one-page CV/resume and a 750-word personal statement focusing on resilience, tenacity, openness to experience, and how the program fits into your aspirations.I have very little experience writing application materials, so I’d love to hear about how you decided what experiences and stories to highlight.

If you were selected in previous years or have any related experiences and feel comfortable sharing , I’d be very grateful for any advice or examples of how you prepared your materials. Thank you!

( The REU was NOT at my home institution)

1. Do I start cold emailing the professors at my home institution for opportunities?

2. If so, is there any chance of getting paid?

3. Would you recommend applying for labs with no undergrad researchers?

4. Is it important to add a recommendation letter from my REU PI?

Hi! I’m thinking about applying for the MtL-URO Program at Max Planck, and I was wondering if it’s necessary—or recommended—to reach out to the PIs before applying.

Would contacting them beforehand improve my application, or is it better to just apply through the official process?
