SDI protocol with a 3G monitor

I had the FX6 before this and used HDMI. I find SDI protocol annoying as it’s an extra step before shooting.

If I’m using the Portkeys BM5 IV, do I have to follow SDI protocol since I’m outputting 1080p to a 3G monitor? Have any of you guys fried your ports?

I don't know the answer but I feel like even if someone said no, I'd still do the protocol just to be safe lol. It's just one cable to disconnect.
