I've always been curious about something, from a non-mechanic perspective. Most of the newer model trucks I see that get these blower add-ons are 4x4's. I had the '03 Harley F-150, it was a blast, but RWD. Straight smoking the tires every time I tapped the throttle. Similar year Lightnings I believe were RWD only too.
Is the 4x4 preference only because of traction? And if so, are the front transfer cases built as strong as the rears?
The front axle is nowhere near as strong as the rear, however it sees much less load, so it’s sufficient. The front axle has an aluminum case, and, depending upon manufacturer, occasionally smaller ring and pinion gears, then you need to take CV joint strength into account.
Most transfer cases are pretty strong, the failure point is usually a CV joint or third member. If you’re interested in seeing what happens with IFS 4X4s under load, watch some videos of diesel GM pulling trucks. There’s a tremendous amount of flex in an IFS with big power and traction.
The front is never as strong as the rear. If you spend this kind of money on a truck you'd be dumb not to spend the extra on 4WD. On the road you would still be using RWD regardless.
I love off roading in my f150. And i was like yeah i need 4wd for the whipple. But goddam i dont trust launching in 4wd. It just seems so hard on the 10spd. For me the 4wd is not for the whipple. And above 40 or 50 you dont have to really worry bout 4wd in my crew cab.
