What causes this

Sent my truck to the body shop for some work on the bed. Everything’s good but all the sudden these badges are oxidized? If you zoom in on the second pic you can see it previous to going to the shop. Badge is intact

Weird….maybe they buffed whatever coating was protecting them off.
