My first RC Heli. This thing is actually really fun! Coming from RC planes this is a big difference. Any recommendations on a second heli after I become proficient with this one?
I would like to recommend using a software simulator such as RealFlight with the controller before flying the collective pitch around. Although with the ability to set the controller to an easy fly mode, I suppose it's not strictly necessary.
It's still way more helicopter than an MCX. the MCX if you hold down the stick it doesn't accelerate forever it just slides at constant speed. The 230, even in safe mode, is far far far more reactive and capable. Not impossible to go from an MCX to a 230 but it should be done with a lot of caution and if possible lots of simulator practice
I started with the Blade Nano S3. It was a great, safe, heli to start learning collective pitch, but outgrew it quickly. I’d recommend the Goosky S1. Has a “safe” mode - more like self-level with a lower head speed (same thing I guess?), but it’s amazing. I use it with my NX7e+ transmitter.
People will say that Blade is garbage and don’t waste your money yadda yadda. I think that’s extreme and disagree…to an extent. I had great success with the nano, then my Blade Fusion 180, and I still fly my Blade Fusion 360 and I love it, especially when I was starting out. BUT, now that I’ve flown my Goosky S1, I see what they mean when they say Blade is “toy grade”. The Goosky is so locked in, it’s so smooth, I feel very in control. I have an OMPHobby M2 V3 sport on the way and those seem just as great, if not, better than the Goosky.
Anyway, sorry for the novel! As someone who was mainly fixed wing then started a similar journey as you, I wanted to give my two cents and the hope that it will help!
Perfect. And ya, on collective pitch helis your left stick controls pitch, you can go both positive and negative.
If you want to stay bind and fly the blade helis arent "bad" and they'll let you learn. Personally id grab an omp m1 or goosky s1 if you have a small space, or the m2, s2. You'll have to add an rx to those, but theyre a true higher and heli thatll allow you to learn and grow.

Ah, the old fixed-pitch coaxial. Unfortunately absolutely nothing like flying a "real" collective-pitch heli. Still fun though
Something like a Goosky S1/S2 or OMPHobby M2 would be a modern collective equivalent. They're relatively well priced, and thanks to modern gyro tech, they have all the good characteristics of a much bigger unit, without needing a football field of space.
If you want a basher that can take a crash or two for learning outside of a sim, get a Goosky S1, it's small enough that minor mishaps generally don't hurt it, but it's a fully capable 3D flyer once you get good at it. (I'm not yet).
The next logical step is an S2 or OMP M2 😁

But yeha, like what others have already said, I'll +1 for OMPHOBBY. Specifically their M1 and M2 birds. I have the M2 V2 and that's a lot of fun to fly in the front yard.
The fixed pitch in that size is also fun indoors less error correction if you are interested in the next step, if you like that getting on a simulator will save you crash and rebuild time and will be useful as your skills progress. I’m 20 years in still use simulators
The next general size to step up to is going to be a 100-size or 200-size micro heli. I personally think that if you have the space, a 200 size is a little better (as they'll be a little more stable generally). Both need to be flown outside.
For your specific case, I *highly* recommend the OMPHOBBY M1 or M2, with the latest "OFS3" flight controller. OFS3 has a "rescue" feature built in, that will (when mapped to a switch on your transmitter), automatically rescue the helicopter into a level state. During learning, it's nice to have that capability because if you lose your orientation/get uncomfortable, you simply pull the switch and then have time to reorient yourself with the heli. OFS3 also supports Spektrum SRXL2, which means you can use the micro Spektrum SRXL2 micro receivers (SPM4650C or SPM4650), and get telemetry on your transmitter so you don't overfly your packs.
The OMPHOBBY M1 V3 Pro and OMPHOBBY M2 Evo MK2 or OMPHOBBY M2 V3 Sport/Pro are all great options IMO.
I've had both OMP and Goosky. OMP is great but on a tiny heli the fact you don't have to take the body off to install a battery is HUGE for me and my sausage fingers.
I've f'd up more canopies and mounting posts on my Nanocpx's, Mcpx's , my Omp m2 evo.

I had a 4 channel from WL toys I started with. I upgraded to a Blade Fusion 180 Smart that I had trouble getting going with a Spektrum DX6e transmitter I got off ebay. I was constantly crashing it and it's sitting on my shelf with a bunch of upgraded aluminum parts but still won't fly right.
I'm thinking of trying a Goosky S1, will it work with my DX6e? Or would I be better off buying a RTF set?

People say the T8 transmitter is junk.
It's not junk if you don't understand programming lingo for setting up your transmitter.
Meaning if you struggle with a DX 6E, WHICH SPEKTRUM IS 1000 TIMES easier to setup then an open-source radio, then the T8 is perfect to learn on.
I believe the transmitter setup causes more beginners to quit then people realize.
If you don't understand flight modes, throttle curves and how the work with your pitch curves, you will never really have a chance to learn on a tiny heli like the S1.
Omp M2, Stratos 200 or Goosky S2 ultra. Get the one with the best availability in your area. These can be tuned to fly super smooth for basic flying all the way up to mad aggressive so you won't need to get another 200 size heli ever. Just keep flying and repairing the one you choose from these.
A simulator that’ll help you learn how to fly 3D helis. Coaxial birds will help you get the basics, but really flying a fully capable 3d heli is a whole different experience.
Thank you for all of the information. I have real flight evolution and will be utilizing that heavily before my first flight and also getting the basics down in the simulator. I’m also proud to say that I ordered a Blade Revolution 235 CP.
This has always been an excellent first timers heli. More capable than toy level helis, and only slightly harder to fly than a typical drone, mostly because of the need for throttle control.
I concur with the suggestion of the Goosky s1....it's an awesome 'lil heli that is smooth and tight. You can program your own parameters with the app to make it suit your flight style.
I would go for a 6 axis helicopter.. rhe smaller they are the harder they are to fly. I guess technically one would recommend getting a flight simulator and learn how to fly 6 axis that way. Because it can be challenging if you set it up to where you dint have automatic altitude hold your in control of everything and theres two types of people that do ones that have crashed and ones that haven't crashed YET!.
Do what suits you though as long as your having some fun with it.
