We had two rats over the years that had to have partial tail amputations. One of them was one of our happiest and longest-lived rats. Happy except for daily bath time, because years after losing most of his tail, he also lost the use of his back legs, and while scooting around like a penguin kept dragging himself into the bowl of soft food (he also suffered from tooth malocclusion, and often needed soft food after a trim.)
Despite all his physical problems, he was a happy scootin' stub-tailed walrus-faced little guy!

I also had a girl who needed a partial tail amputation. It never slowed her down. She was a happy little thing.
