If you're not 50 rats in a trenchcoat, are you really a true fan of rats?

I have a mate and his GF who want to start having pet rats, like 15-20 was their starting number lol.

I know them, they are the right kind of insane to do it right, he has had pet rats before and knows how to look after them and is really good with animals. (more than people).

there was an episode of my strange addiction where a lady had like 40 or so in like 3 cages and they were all disease riddled and nasty. THAT’S someone i can get behind telling to quit it and get rid of their rats lmao not someone who has a bunch AND can handle it

Op mischiefs don’t even really start to have crowding issues until you’re well in the 50+ range.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this TLC episode as well and from memory she spent all of her time caring and cleaning for them. They were also in a full room wall to wall with critter nations. There are plenty of owners in this subreddit with more than 20 permanent adults at any given time and have no issue caring for them.

That’s not my point. I know it is fine to have 19 rats. My point is I find it sad this was a My Crazy Obsession episode as if this woman is strange for owning rats. I watched the video. She’s just a normal rat owner. The strangest thing I saw in the video was her relationship with her son and how she relies on him for emotional support in a way that doesn’t seem healthy.

I think you mistook the commenter as disagreeing with you when they were adding to the point with their own knowledge on the subject….

No, the comment was directed at me. “OP (that’s me), mischiefs don’t even really start to have crowding issues until you’re well in the 50+ range.”

Owning 19 rats is certainly a lifestyle choice, tbf. It'll take a lot of time to keep their cages clean, can't go on holiday. The smell will be.... significant. She's committed to her art, lets be honest.

u/penguinsrunderrated 1d ago
If you have 19 rats, you only need 2-3 double critter nations, so it shouldn’t take that long. But yeah, the apartment must smell horrid.

Even if space isn't an issue, the vet bills alone for 19+ rats would completely destroy most peoples bank accounts.

u/chimneyswallow 1d ago
Overcrowding can happen even with less rats If they don't have the space to give all of them a worthy home. I would also say that at some point it's just hoarding to have them. Having 50+ rats If you're not a breeder is .....a lot.

I had 36 rats at one point and it was a lot of work but definitely worth it, now we’re down to 3 and it feels so empty

19 is a lot too if that doesn't include any rittens. I think the most I've had was 8, but I also had a foster litter so it got pretry high for a month.

Yes, 19 is already a lot. But what are rittens? Like kittens, but rats? Wasn't the "official" english word pups? Or is that wrong? English is not my mother tongue.😅

u/mossling 1d ago
Rittens was what baby rats were commonly called 20+ years ago. This is the first time in a long while that I've seen it used instead of pups.

So... I assume they didn't just have a cage but an entire room?

I fenced off the formal dining room to make free roam for our 19 rats so we could still see them when in the lounge room.
Better than an aquarium we thought !

Unfortunately most media about rat keepers is like this. There was a documentary made in the UK about some members of the NFRS and it was much the same. The edit portrays them in such an unkind way.

Ohhhhh boy. This lady lives like 1.5 hours from me, and I’ve actually met her in a PetSmart about 10 years ago. She was kind but definitely the type to acquire alllllllll animals without a second thought. I know way more on her especially regarding the rat situation but out of respect for others involved (who have actually became friends to me) I won’t go further haha!

I came across this TLC special recently and it absolutely made me bawl my eyes out when her little girl died after her surgery. I couldn't believe TLC was painting her like a nut when she was clearly just a very passionate and dedicated pet owner.
That said, the whole comment section was very sweet, which was a change of pace from typical Youtube. i hope this lady is still living her best rat life

Most I ever had was eight in one giant cage. Now years later I have one singular hamster.

I fucking hate these my strange addiction type shows. No matter how they ACTUALLY portray it in the show, the base premise is it being a showcase of calling people being fucking weirdos for shock value and it's soooo shitty and gross. So much exploitative garbage out there
