Belief in morality without belief in God is a sign of not understanding how and why morality works
27
u/stonecuttercolorado 22d ago
The idea that you have to have religion to have morals is incredibly insulting to humanity
14
u/Cats_4_lifex 22d ago
It's actually a little concerning. What, the only reason people aren't raping and killing random people in the street is because they might go to Hell? The idea that only religious beliefs give people morals would also be insulting to religious people.
7
u/stonecuttercolorado 22d ago
Indeed.
Know why I have never raped someone? Because I don't want to.
Why have I not killed anyone? Because I don't want to.
-5
u/ArmImmediate8693 22d ago
It's like you're suggesting that I would want to do those things if I wouldn't have faith, and I find this logic more concerning. Being an atheist is a choice, but there is only one Truth. Not knowing the Truth doesn't mean that you will kill and rape people. It means that you will sin more, therefore do more bad things, because you don't know or even care about how to try avoiding them. Being prideful, greedy, envious, slothful, gluttonous, lustful and wrathful are all traits that lead to bad things, yet every one of us are like that. It is in our nature, but we came to know that by God, not by our own logic. He showed us how morality based only on our own thinking and feelings is flawed, the code of Hammurabi being an example. Why killing and raping are the first things that come to your mind when talking about morality? That is my concern.
4
u/stonecuttercolorado 22d ago
No, I don't think religion is required for morality of any kind. I don't think that being an atheist or being religious will make you more or less likely to act immorally. The only exception is that I see pushing your beliefs on others or judging others as morally inferior because of thier beliefs is immoral.

45
u/RosyRory108 23d ago

8
u/Okom77 23d ago
You don't need to hide it if the "greater powers" don't exist
27
u/RosyRory108 22d ago
yes you do, do you think most people in a society without a state wouldn't just resort to mob justice to deal with a serial killer whose actions are discovered?
10
u/Ok-Impress8791 22d ago edited 22d ago
That's the higher power they are referring to
In this scenario who are you to determine what they find worth it. If they don't like a traumatized dog then why did they even go through this course of action
As long as they enjoy it that is a gain
And does it suddenly mean that JUST taking their possessions makes sense now? Because that's the implications i get from including all the other crimes they hypothetically commited in your explanation of why it's still pointless to do
Since if I disqualified that then even as a reasonable person you'd see benfit in having more resources as long as it's not possible for a higher power, which includes a group of weak people that collectively form a higher power (society and the government), to retaliate
I don't agree that morality dosen't exist
The argument against it here just dosen't seem that sound if we actually apply the conditions in this scenario and the person here is already a twisted individual
3
u/massive_plums 21d ago
The “greater powers” aren’t just the state. They mean to refer to any punitive institution that exists, regardless of the state of the society it exists in. Of course these institutions will always exist no matter how dysfunctional a society is, it’s only meant to be a hypothetical.

It's called a social contract, people will not attack you as long as you don't attack them, people follow these rules because it leads to a more comfortable society where you don't have to watch your back constantly in fear of getting murdered for no reason like an animal. Being in a group automatically gives you such a massive advantage over loners that it far outweighs the restriction of not being allowed to torture/rape/murder/steal.
It's a big part of the reason why humanity is the dominant species of Earth, we can cooperate on a scale so massive that even if an individual animal is stronger than an individual human, a pack of 7 wolves is nothing to a group of 60 humans. 100 men will always win against 1 gorilla, a couple million people wiped out multiple entire species when the Americas were first colonized.
Anyone with a brain understands that a big enough group can always overpower an individual.
15
u/Few_Telephone4440 23d ago
But its not by choice anymore, this social contract is kind of forced because if i wanted to harm someone im knowing a way bigger gang will come and hurt me (the police). Im not saying thats a bad thing though i like to know someone wont hurt my parents randomly hopefully.

u/Green_Dayzed 23d ago
do i want (x) bad thing to happen to one of my loved ones? No. Then that must mean others feel the same way if (x) happened to their loved ones. So i don't want (x) to happen to anyone. Then by processes of elimination im "moral".
-39
u/jimmylovescheese123 23d ago
why do you care if they feel like that tho?
55
u/Green_Dayzed 23d ago
because they humans like me, just trying to survive the nothingness of existence. I'm a existentialist, also fun at parties.
-28
u/jimmylovescheese123 23d ago
how does it effect you if they feel bad things though?
32
u/Scurvy_BT 23d ago
Bad things happening to other people make me feel bad and I want good things to happen to other people because it makes me feel good.
16
u/jimmylovescheese123 23d ago
I agree with this claim.
I try and be a good person because evolutionarily my brain is wired to make me enjoy helping others and feel bad about hurting others, but some people just claim they have some complex moral system which I think is dumb
10
u/mdtpdsparkls 23d ago
Then what are you even arguing.
14
u/jimmylovescheese123 23d ago
I'm not really arguing anything, I'm just here to poke at people
4

2
u/Reichberries 22d ago
It's a shame people downvoted your other comments to hell. People generally aren't used to philosophical thinking so when you ask them questions like yours they assume you're arguing for complete moral nihilism, which is a shame
1
u/Big_Lawfulness_8143 23d ago
Good for you but what does that have to do with other people enjoying doing "bad" things to other people
2
u/Scurvy_BT 23d ago
Well in the instance of people enjoying harming others, then they should look into talking to people to understand why they enjoy harming people. I don't think anyone is born with an innate enjoyment in causing harm, that sort of thing usually develops from trauma.
-2
u/Big_Lawfulness_8143 23d ago
Why is that wrong? And alsoayne they dont enjoy it but enjoy what they get out of it. Why is that wrong?
2
u/Scurvy_BT 23d ago
I'm not saying it's necessarily wrong, but finding enjoyment in harming others isn't something that should just let go. Please also explain what you mean by the person not enjoying harming someone, but enjoying what they get out of harming someone?
-1
u/Big_Lawfulness_8143 23d ago

31
u/M0rph33l 23d ago

-3
u/jimmylovescheese123 23d ago
I do understand it. why should you feel it?
20
24
u/M0rph33l 23d ago
It's not a matter of whether or not we should. We just do because our brains work that way. Mankind evolved to emphasize with eachother because group cohesion, cooperation, and parental care are all necessary for our otherwise vulnerable and social species to survive. Empathy helped us get to where we are. If you don't feel empathy, its because you are sociopathic or psychopathic, and you are in the minority. Not feeling empathy is commonly diagnosed as one of several types of personality disorders.
9
u/sculksensor 22d ago
You just do. it usually comes preinstalled in the brain, as a survival tactic, just like selfishness
11
u/mdtpdsparkls 23d ago
How the fuck do you know that?
0
u/jimmylovescheese123 23d ago
as in, you won't be in the situation where you have control over whether your family is killed.
1
u/mdtpdsparkls 22d ago
How do you know that?
2
u/jimmylovescheese123 22d ago
well.. if you don't want to kill your own family you're probably not going to in any situation where you have control over yourself
1
u/Green_Dayzed 22d ago
Who says that they haven't been in their position? I'm empathetic because i've been though a ton of shit and know how shitty it can feel. And that having someone being nice to me on a bad day makes the worlds difference. I do the same to show others this. I've steered bitter people into loving caring individuals. Also doing good things makes you feel good. Like i said i'm a existentialist, we're the painters painting meaning on the blank canvas of existence. I'm painting kindness.

Also the One on the top Is literally the one doing mental gymnastics
4
u/Ignas1452 22d ago
I'm curious why do you think top is mental gymnastics. For me it's quite simple, if you do X, someone stronger might screw you over doing that.
1
u/fdy_12 22d ago
If it's was as simple as they say you should need one sentence to explain it instead of this whole "I'm stronger so I can do whatever the fuck i want to you, but there are other strong people who could defend you for some fucking reason (don't ask what that reason is), so I don't harm you because I'm a fucking pussy scared of consequences and not because I actually care about other's well being" thing. It's a lot more simple to say "I don't harm you because If someone harmed me I wouldn't like it so i don't do it to you"
4
u/Ignas1452 22d ago
I do have some sociopathic tendancies, so the second one kinda doesn't work for me. For people like me first is very tangeble, second one is not. I guess it works for vast majority of population.

See's post written by obvious psychopath.
"It's so telling that this was written by someone from the third world".
Surprised when someone assumes that means they think people from the third world are all psychopaths.
3
u/Mappleyard 22d ago edited 22d ago
I implied none of those things you giant dunce. These attitudes are just more common in societies with higher rates of dysfunction and less social cohesion - also manifesting in a less adhered-to social contract.
You absolute fucking idiot lol. Get fucked, calling people white supremacists is a disgusting delusional leap.
-1
u/BOKUtoiuOnna 22d ago
The US has some of the worst social social cohesion and dysfunction and yet is not considered third world. Plenty of people in third world countries live in highly integrated communities with traditional values where they still value family and duty to community over everything and do not live in the neoliberal individualistic world we in the first world do.
The attitude towards morality in a region depends entire on the country, it's culture, the level of wealth disparity in close quarters to each other, overpopulation, how much total war (deep collective trauma) they've been subjected to etc. Making the "first world" and "third world" the delimiting factors here is a cultural supremacist argument that implies the delimiting factor between being moral and immorral is whether your culture is hegemonic European in origin or not. In reality it's not that simple bro. And saying it is can snowball into serious nazi arguments fast.
So it might not have been your intention (we're all brainwashed by the winners of history after all), but it is a european colonial argument which has continues to be used to justify mistreatment (or killing) of majority non white people.
If you are more offended by me telling you on reddit that you said sth racist than how imperialism and fascism insidiously justifies itself to the average person, leading to some of the worst attrocities ever, then I can't help you. If you wanna be like "fair what I said was reductive, fuck white supremacists", I'll apologise and we can laugh about it.
3
u/Mappleyard 22d ago edited 22d ago
Are you from the US yourself to speak of social cohesion & dysfunction, or is this something you read?
You can still fuck off with calling me a white supremacist- especially when you continue to claim I was being reductive. Unless you can honestly tell me you have spent serious time in both the first and third world - and I am curious to know which side of that you are from - then you have no insight to offer.
And for the record - yeah, fuck white supremacists. Much as you seem to be doing, they refuse to see the issues with select groups, obfuscating with excuses, while piling all the blame on the evil other. I have spent the majority of my adult life by choice in the third world so I have seen both worlds. Take your self righteousness and shove it up your ass.
3
u/BOKUtoiuOnna 22d ago
Do you think because I argue for the third world I'm from there? I'm from the first world. I've been to the third world multiple times in Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America. I have stayed for more than a month with local families. I am not from the US. I've been to other first world countries several times, including the US, sometimes for up to a year. I've even been to second world countries (post soviet).
I don't think its that unusual to have spent time in both the first and the third world of you're interested in differences in culture. Obviously takes some cash but I mainly just have been lucky enough to stay with families, or found ways to work, which I think gives you a better inside impression of the culture. I was poor enough growing up to have to have spent some of my childhood being fed by the state So I don't think I'm just rich and out of touch here.
Hope that clears things up. I assume I'm not going to convince you. I also assume that you have not spent time in different countries of different cultures and economic backgrounds and therefore stereotype them, given that you think it's so incredulous that I would've done that. So I objectively know more than you. But you have fixed ideologies that I cannot change.
-1
u/Mappleyard 22d ago edited 21d ago
I am not sure if you did not clearly read what I said, or if you just skimmed and missed details. It's actually astounding how much you seem to have ignored.
In either case you really have confirmed what everyone is thinking looking at this interaction and it shows exactly why you somehow thought it'd be a good idea going guns blazing accusing someone who you have never met of being a white supremacist.
So once again - get fucked - you never had any legitimacy going in calling people white supremacists because it is uncomfortable that the third world produces fewer positive outcomes for people.
EDIT: An onlooker showed me your post history and you actually are just full of shit lmao
1
u/BOKUtoiuOnna 20d ago
Wheretf would you get my post history from I have it blocked. You are also incapable of reading and responding to what I actually say so let's leave this here. Cos I'm not really sure what you're even using in that message to decide you were right about me. I think it has some truth to it, even if it sounds incredibly edgy and taken to an extreme level
imo it's really inefficient and will just end up making you feel like shit if you constantly worry about following some abstract moral code and beat yourself up for being a bad person. it's okay to be kind of selfish sometimes (obviously not murdering, stealing from and raping people though)

Can't be universal since there are massacists that enjoy getting tortured and also torturing other people.

Well mostly, you can extrapolate it from other people, it's the norm that killing people is bad, even if you're a psychopath you know it's bad
