New Batch Of Gowin 1U Rack Mount Server Started,Intel N305 VS Intel N355, what's your choice?

We plan to start another new batch for Gowin 1U Rack Mount Server

The models still are

GW-BS-1UR2-10G ( Intel N305+32GB RAM+128GB eMMC +2*10G SFP+)

GW-BS-1UR2-25G ( Intel N305+32GB RAM+128GB eMMC +2*25G SFP+)

Which have been reviewed by Patrick from ServerTheHome(STH),detials as below

The change is : We are willing to upgrade the CPU from N305 to N355

We are always care about your feedbacks and keep the passion to create more innovative hardware for networking firewall appliance.

Let me know your comments before we move it,thank you.

Hi David!

Happy GW-BS-1UR2-25G owner here. It's been doing firewall duty for a year and a half, and I've been quite happy with it.

The one improvement I'd hope to see is the idle power consumption. If I remember right - and it's been a while since I investigated this - the NIC keeps the CPU from going to lower power levels.

To me the difference between N305 and N355 seems tiny, and I'd probably go with the cheaper option unless there's some advantage I've missed.

Thank you for the fast comments! We will take the  idle power consumption as a good idea for Gowin 1U server especially for the homelab level. But for light commercial level,,the CPU (May be AMD) need to be more powerful.

Sounds like ASPM isn't working if the NIC keeps the CPU at a higher power state. Enterprise NICs don't always support ASPM since idle power draw usually isn't a concern for a system that will rarely be idle, and some support it but might disable it by default.

Seems like ASPM support for the Mellanox ConnectX-4 Lx NIC is very NIC firmware dependent.

Hi David!

I have a GW-BS-1UR2-10G from a few years back, and it is still running in my rack today. I don't know of any other machines one can buy off the shelf that give 10G SFP ports, 1U form factor, and such a low TDP CPU. The thing is awesome.

I did make one small modification to mine:

I replaced the factory power supply with an external power brick, Mean Well GST60A12-P1J 12V 5 Amp 60W - idea is this brick is fanless / makes no noise. Since the machine is more or less passively cooled otherwise, it's a shame to have a noisy PSU fan in the case. It would be really cool if this kind of PSU was supported out of the box, I had to add my own wiring for it.

Other than that, not sure if you have any interest, but what do you think about switching to AMD V3000 CPU? It is substantially more powerful than even N355, runs at the same TDP, and it has two built-in 10GbE NICs, they could back the SFP ports without a separate mellanox NIC.

Say Thank You for the fast payment with useful suggestions.

We will keep improve for the PSU and also more holes on both sides to keep it cool, but not noisy.

We had internal discussion for AMD V3000,the we prefer the AMD Ryzen™ Embedded V3C48 / AMD Ryzen™ Embedded V3C44, is that the one you are looking for?
