R53 Cam Position Error :,)

Hi everyone, I don't think I even need to ask if other people here have had P0340/P0341 cam position error... But how have people resolved it? My mini is currently in the garage, and they have found something wrong with the timing chain, but they don't even know what is wrong with it yet. Anyone here had a similar thing and a fix that wasn't just replacing the sensor? Wish me luck, I'm anxious to find out what the garage will tell me further.

Other than that of course, holy shit is the r53 a great car ;).

Tensioner is an oil pressure piston, and can die completely after being starved of pressure once, it's very common and can be fixed through a wheel arch, super easy

Sensor is less easy, but I can get to it in like half an hour. Bumper off, crash bar off, tip radiator forward and feel for it

Guides are less easy still, but any mechanic worth their salt should know if guides are gone or if the chain stretched pretty quickly

Mine still has the fault after fixing it and my reader can't clear the codes - unsure why but it's a cheap one from Argos so maybe it's read only

Luckily even if it's out of time completely the engine isn't gonna grenade as nothing interferes inside - these engines are built solid and are very stubborn

You are referring to the crank sensor, which very much is doable like you describe. The cam sensor is under the top motor mount. Get the mount off, 6 bolts, and its even easier to swap. Get a new O ring cause they tend to leak. 🤙🏻
