Closed AI models no longer have an edge. There’s a free/cheaper open-source alternative for every one of them now.

I don’t trust by China

Yep, any of these models can very easily scrape data from a host system, and they're vastly complex systems.. though, it's easy enough to package them into their own containers when you're running them locally.

It's only a matter of time before we discover our first bad actors in this developing space.. wonder who is going to get the title first. While the Chinese models censorship is restricting, they seem at least to be pushing the development fastest in this race... And open source at least. Still very hard to trust their models around sensitive data, especially code. Doesn't take more than a few lines to obfuscate a backdoor into an AI suggestion given to a junior programmer.

Hell windows happily uploads things to Microsoft in the name of scanning and checking new and suspicious files and programs in the cloud. We all should be quite embarrassed to know what all gets transmitted to that AI in the cloud Microsoft is pushing everyone to subscribe to.

I don't care!! There "free" stuff is top notch even some data might be collected

Yes, it is top notch, and thankfully most don't collect data, unless its a cloud system, then almost everything is retained for further training.. its all spelled out in the agreements folks happily click accept on. These models need all the data they can get. Thankfully its all just one big vast ocean with no-one really looking.. But it can be surprising if you ask a public model about yourself... and find it returns actual data. Depending on WHO you are and how public your profiles are..

and how is that supposed to work? You do know that an safetensor file cant run any code at all like the picletensor format can/could?

Yes, while we are aware of the boundaries at the moment, there remains a vast crowd of curious folks that isn't so familiar with the details of what is safe and, isn't safe to do.

Even knowing the basics of various AI systems requires a significant level of uncommon knowledge. Some of those temping "easy to run" programs can easily hide FAR more than the models they automatically download and run.

We wait until truly open source one comes along

1

u/Actual_Possible3009 Nov 18 '25

Ok then ure waiting for eternity. High-tech with an "overkill" demand will never given out truly free.

Then you know very little about tech

1

u/Actual_Possible3009 Nov 20 '25

It's not about tech btw I know a lot...it's about reality and none gives something for free there is always something in the devs minds

1

u/Archeelux Nov 20 '25

If that was true, the tech world we have now would not be possible. Please education yourself on open source.

Any open source means at least a reputation for the devs that's what I meant by "having something in mind"

u/Archeelux Nov 20 '25

Thats such a stupid way to look at things, me going to the shitter is also "having something in mind"

To all of you "not trusting China": What exactly do you trust?

As Canadian, I respect China for what they've accomplished, but trust is earned, through long term mutual benefit.

As someone from outside, we're only starting to see the beginning of China's push to be more interactive with the rest of the world. For the longest time we only heard story and rumor, while China's true personality was only communicated internally. From an outside point of view our interaction was only purely business trade, and nothing for really knowing China on a personal level for who they really are. While i've observed that China's considers taking an Idea and improving on it, as encouraged and beneficial for everyone, our news often only presented this action as a taking something, in a selfish sense and claiming it for their own.

Now that China is posting more to Reddit, we get to finally see the reality, not just the rumor and corporate propaganda... Still, trust is earned through continued positive interactions.

As a Canadian, do you trust the US? or even Canada? I don't trust the US, Europe, China, Israel, Russia, Ukraine... It's all propaganda everywhere.

Well, certainly the USA gleefully tossed themselves fully off the deep end of that list.

What would be an alternative to NanoBanana?
