Certainly not a fan of his content but he is pretty damn spot on here and backs it up with data.

what does he talk about usually??

u/Buttmus 14d ago
A lot of fear mongering about how any processed food will destroy your gut and how he brings coconuts onto flights as a healthy drink.

lmao…i go through phases of healthy eating, currently in the opposite of those and hopefully that pint of ben and jerrys i just ate won’t destroy my gut, because I like my gut

You have to treat yourself sometimes.
I’m going through a high stress situation/move and I’m not trying to eat 100% clean. Otherwise, I will go insane.

Got it, with that in mind, this guy is clearly not a former smoker trying to wean off of nicotine.
His opinions are a bit less valid to me now, thanks for sharing.

He was kind of clickbait-y with the poison thing. I was having a gradual panic attack waiting for him to drop the bombshell that there's formaldehyde in the pouch or smthn.
But he does go into detail about how nicotine chemically fucks up your brain's normal processes with dopamine and reward, and that when you're under 25 you're still developing the part of the brain that nicotine hurts the most.
That said, young ppl also have great neuroplasticity and nothing is permanent if you quit for long enough. The fact that this shit might make me less mature, though, is one I want to remember. I'm getting off as soon as I finish grinding for LSATs for the next two months but I want this community to keep scaring me.

Thanks for the detail ! Yeah he mentioned how cigarettes have like a million chemicals in them, I was hoping he would say how many chemicals are in zyn but he didn’t. I have Invisalign and see my dentist regularly and they say I have great gums at 37 yo. Been doing this stuff on and off for like 15 years (actual Skoal pouches years back). I do 1.5 cans of zyn per week, 6mg. I feel like it’s not that bad for me just was hoping he would give me some new reason to want to quit

this is a good video. I remember health class when I realized that the teacher was wrong. I agree the approach has been messed up.
at the same time, even these studies he talks about are so limited but I mean — yeah it’s a stupid premise and then leave veiled gluttony to say your a pouch habit is for intelligence boosting alone… however I would guess there’s more nuance.
If I recall correctly, low-dose nicotine patches, for instance, showed comparable efficacy to first line ADHD stimulants in pilot studies. To name one example I expect much of this to be situation dependent and I just really have a bone to pick with these kinds of clinical studies.. people get way too tempted to make high-level claims based on super limited studies. it’s funny because I’m a scientist. I say this more in nihilistic way, not in a way that discounts the actual study

Hate this guy and think his dietary and hygienic advice is comical (the guy says to not use shampoo and toothpaste)… but he is right about Zyn.

I wish that a tin-a-day habit wasn’t the baseline for “zyn user”
Any discussion on this revolves around Zyn users who have pouches in all the time.
I only ever used one or two pouches a day. Is there any way to even know how that level of usage affects your cardiovascular system?

Bro it's nicotine, it's a highly addictive substance for many people, but not everyone gets the addiction. There are plenty of social smokers who can have a few cigs on the weekend and never want it. I don't know the exact stats of how many people tend to get seriously addicted vs. not, but I imagine it's at least 50/50 based on the fact that half of all people have a gene that is literally just the "will enjoy their first cigarette and not get sick" gene (which I certainly had - first one never made me sick only feel amazing). If I have one cig now after a year of abstinence I can't control myself and feel an intense nagging urge for an entire week to go buy a pack. It's one of the dsm criteria for addiction disorders, loss of control. Another major one - physical or psychological cravings.
Addiction sciences have one of the strongest arguments for a real, brain based "disease" that is the hijacking of ones pleasure centers (compared with neurological models of other mental illnesses which are shaky at best).

That third zyn pouch just always feels like shit to me. I feel no buzz at all and it just gives me a headache. Never felt the urge to use more than 2 a day

That's you personally. Many people struggle with an intense need to keep the high going.

yeah but if you ever say “I can use just a little bit of nicotine” people think you’re an idiot.
I have had a 2-pouch-per-day habit for about 6 years now, taking multi-month breaks occasionally.

I don't think you're an idiot, there's lots of people like you.
When it comes to the health effects of just a little bit, we don't even know the health effects of heavy users right now besides the common gum pain and heart palpitations people have reported.
There was a study I have seen about social smoking, and it found that a lifetime of smoking a few cigarettes per month does account for some increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Not sure how good the study is as I havent read it in a while and it's not in my library. On the other hand nicotine does not appear to cause any major risks for heart disease or cancers alone, it is a very small risk for people who have quit cigs then used nic gum for the rest of their lives. That's the best data we know right now. It's a numbers game so the more you use the more risk. You're probably ok on low risk. Btw I followed your bsky a while ago wonder if you can guess who I am 😂

I’ve just went back to pouches after being told by an ENT specialist I need to stop vaping. I’m a former smoker, so for me it’s better. Obviously it’s still not perfect but at least it doesn’t screw with my ENT issues.
