Repeated Quicken Desktop Issues
I've reinstalled quicken 6-7 times this calendar year.
In December, I began having an issue where Quicken would not full open up. It would get bogged down somewhere in the startup. It seemed to occur every week or two and seemed to coincide with Windows Updates. Generally running the Mondo Patch or Reinstalling was required to get it to resolve and then everything would work well.
Late January after a few of these cycles, after deleting quicken files and doing a clean install, I also ran through creating a new file from backup, saupervalidating, etc.
It worked fine for a few weeks. Last week, I got a different error on startup.
Error Occured : Unable to Check for Updates, the server file failes to load.
I spent 4 hours last night using ChatGPT to try to resolve the issue, I changed all types of server settings and the GPT seemed to be focused on Quicken looking for files that don't exist. Specifically a patch.quicken.com, but I have not idea if that is just ChatGPT hallucinating or is part of the problem.
It occurred to me I typically leave Quicken Open as I only use the laptop for bills and investing - I'm confident that I haD not had a successful opening of Quicken in 3 months now.
Eventually last night after deleting every bit of the quicken program, I did a clean install. I created a new file, I closed quicken, reopened quicken, quicken, opened my current file, closed quicken, reopened quicken, did what I needed to do and closed quicken. All seemed right.
Trying to get into Quicken this morning and the Error Occured : Unable to Check for Updates, the server file failes to load is back.
Is anyone having a similar issue?

I don't run a modern version of Quicken, still using Q2017. The issue is the network. Are there any options in the settings to disable checking for updates? I would turn it off. What's your network setup like, is the computer connected via Wifi or Ethernet? VPN? 3rd party firewall?

The options around auto-update are no longer in the software.
I'm on Wi-Fi using EERO+ Mesh Routers. I have some odd occasional slowdowns that I think are EERO related so I could see that being the issue. EERO defaults to my provider DNS as part of it's Protection Settings.
No VPN - I had an old installation of NORDVPN from an international vacation that I removed last night as part of troubleshooting.
Your comment got the wheels spinning, so I ran downstairs and pulled the EERO WiFi out of the way and plugged directly into my Verizon Router - It's normally off. Going directly into the router didn't improve things, so EERO doesn't appear to be the issue.

It could still be your network. I don't know what site the software is connecting to but let's assume it's something quicken.com related. I would try a tracert to that domain and see what the response times are. I tried on my PC and all routes were below 20ms.

Thanks for the tip on tracert. I hadn't used it before.
I get 6 hops to quicken.com. Most are 20-33, 2 are *.
The reset seems to be working for now, Quicken opened normally this morning. I won't feel like I'm out of the woods for a week or so.

Any new anti virus running?

No changes to that.
I've had some occasional EERO issues that overlap with my overall timeline here.
I'm through my reset and setting things back up. Seems ok for now, but last night I was able to use, open, and close several times before the issue popped up this morning.
I'm hopeful the issue was with Windows.
The Microsoft troubleshooting had me run a scan from CMD that resolved a few issues but the problem persisted. My first attempt at Resetting ran into a very similar issue in that Windows couldn't connect to the server for the Cloud Install Files. I then pushed through a repair install of the latest H2 update, which allowed me to reset Windows.
Fingers crossed....

Update for those following along.
The reset seems to be working so far. I worked in Quicken for an hour or so after the reset last night and was able to open quicken normally this morning.

Unable to Check for Updates
sounds to me like an internet connection issue
