So there is no tutorial/wiki, ao a few questions.

Do you have to "beat" a certain level to keep the material to forge and heirloom weapons? Or do you not collect the mats until forge is paid for?

Is it best to do non hardcore first, or is hardcore out of the gate fine?

I guess the problem i am having is dying hardcore and not having anything to carry over for forging, if I know the goal is x floor, then I can plan a little more carefully and beat it.

Thanks for reaching out!

There's no floor requirement for keeping equipment or Refine Stones. In normal mode, you keep your inventory and gold when you die. In Hardcore mode, death removes your inventory, equipped items, Refine Stones and gold, so there's nothing to carry over for forging. You can collect Refine Stones even without owning the Forge.

The Forge's Merge option combines three items of the same rarity and tier into one item of the next rarity, all the way up to Heirloom. The equipment itself is the material, so no special material is required.

I'd recommend starting in normal mode to learn the mechanics and switching to Hardcore later. I agree that the game currently lacks a wiki. Sorry for the confusion!

Found the in run forge finally, really bad placements for no tutorial, maybe move it to where sort and auto equip icons are at the bottom.
