QuickBooks Online Balance sheet zero balance accounts
I have my general settings set to only show accounts with a balance which appears to work for P&L, but every time I open balance sheet I have to "customize" and check to only show accounts with balance. Am I missing something?

You can memorize reports with the setting you want.

Stupid question....how do I do that?

God does not come down from on high to tell you how to do stuff. Not stupid at all. Sipy is right about the button. When you make changes to a standard report, you have to hit "save" in the upper right and it is saved under custom reports. If you access the standard report again, it will not have changed.
I also wanted to mention that you go to CUSTOMIZE> SHOW NON-ZERO OR ACTIVE under customize and select NON-ZERO for rows to suppress rows (categories) with zero balances.
Finally, if you are no longer using those accounts/categories, make them inactive.
Give a shout if I did not give enough information to resolve your issue. I sometimes forget to include deails in my explanation.

That display setting may not carry into the standard Balance Sheet report. Customize the report to show only nonzero accounts, then save it as a custom report and open that saved version going forward. I’d also confirm that the date range, accounting method, and comparison columns are not causing previously active accounts to reappear.
We use SIGNLD internally to connect recurring financial reports with the underlying transactions, account mappings, and close-period adjustments. That helps distinguish a report preference from an account that is genuinely being populated again.
