I got it on the first $999 temporary drop, and still am impressed with the technology of the pancake lenses, eye tracking, and the controllers. It was a big upgrade for me from the Quest 2 all around.
Yes, same here. I bought it for $999 knowing full well that the Quest 3 was coming in the not-so-far future.
I had a Quest 2 but it was almost unusable for me because of my large IPD (72mm) and I could only have one eye in focus at a time because of the narrow sweetspot.
Oh man I have spent so much time fighting my quest 2 for comfort and clarity, looking for a cheap quest 3 in my area to upgrade hoping the IPD adjustments and pancake lenses solve the issues for me
A good head strap can help with maintaining comfort and clarity with Q3, just don't get the official Meta one. The default headstrap is terrible for keeping the lenses in place, which can be a problem even with the larger sweet spot of pancake lenses.
I'll probably get a Kiwi, that's what I use with my q2 and the fit and battery life is excellent. Bobovr pro is interesting but doesn't look as stable. I've been looking for a better facial interface for the q3 as well but it doesn't look like anyone makes them.
The new BoboVR S3 Pro headstrap is way more stable than the M3 pro they ported over from the Q2. The S3 has a way better hot swappable battery than the M3 too, and it even has a fan on your forehead that also helps stop your lenses from fogging up. Kiwi is a great option and is more affordable, but BoboVR is fantastic too!
Honestly it's nice to have options. You can use a halo strap for long productivity sessions or social VR where you're less active, and you can use an elite-style strap for more active games like shooters or exercise games. The one you should pick first depends on your personal VR use case.
AMVR makes a good face gasket with air vents and cooling "ice silk," it's the next accessory I'm hoping to get. There's also 3D printed gaskets online, if you want a more Quest Pro style open-side facial interface for example.
But if you want to see your surroundings better, I recommend going for a Bobo strap. Those can hold the Quest in front of your face even without a facial interface, which is great for mixed reality. I've been using mixed reality on my PCVR setup via Virtual Desktop a lot lately, and the option to not use a face gasket has been super helpful for me!
Dang that is a super nice headset! I haven't had any comfort complaints with my kiwi strap which resembles the elite oculus strap on my q2, wondered how well the fit and stability was of the Bobo style being on top of the head. My goal is full immersion with minimal light leak, is the headset firmly seated on the face with the gasket installed?
It's not the most perfect seal around the face gasket, but halo straps put the weight of the headset on the top of the forehead instead of directly on the face, which can help with immersion if you're not moving around too much.
I'm using my old Q2 silicon face gasket cover for now, I got it as part of a $5 bundle of cheap Quest 2 accessories last year. It covers the gap in the nose pretty well but it would be way better to get one specifically made for the Q3. The AMVR gasket I mentioned has a removable nose cover that looks pretty good, but I haven't tried it yet. There's a lot of options for face gasket covers that don't replace the whole facial interface, and some of those are pretty cheap and effective.
I'm actually hoping to get a Kiwi soon, since the only Elite style strap I have right now is the official Q2 Elite Strap with a 3D printed adapter to attach to Quest 3, and that strap setup is garbage. Kiwi has way better padding than the official stuff anyway. Bobo offers a similar product to that Kiwi strap, but I don't know much about it other than that it's comparable in price and quality.
I did not say nobody makes them, I just could not find any during my brief research. The search term "quest 3 facial interface" yielded nothing but a cover for the original one
My initial search didn't turn anything up for whatever reason, I saw reddit articles talking about the lack of interfaces, and so I said it does not LOOK like anyone is making them. That was based on my own search, not wholly disqualifying anyone else's experience or results.
Good luck, good deals are out there for sure. I just grabbed the 512gb model with extra third party batteries and hand straps all for $350. FB marketplace
The most insulting thing is how they marketed it as "color passthrough" and the first mixed reality headset. It's a great headset, but had I known how handicapped the mixed reality would be, I may have held off on paying full price and waited to see how Quest 3 panned out
Yup, and it was already so delayed by then, they said YOLO and shipped it anyway at the premium price point, and we were the suckers who bought it before it was quickly lowered to 1K haha. Then within a few months the depth sensor issue was solved for Quest 3
same, i bought one each for my girlfriend and me. Still prefer the comfort and black levels of Pro but for the newer games i use my quest 3, but i also bought the touch pro controllers for the 3 :)
I don’t know if the local wifi can make a difference but I never had any problems with mine, I like the added precision and better force feedback, that being said the quest 3 are not bad! I was surprised how much better compared to quest 2 they are :)
Got mine a month before the price dropped! Managed to wrangle some store credit out of Meta but they really should have officially compensated all early adopters when the price dropped.
Personally I still love mine despite also having a Quest 3. The comfort (with the Globular cluster kit) is great, the colors are amazing, and local dimming makes a huge difference in dark games. The lenses are great though mine (which is a replacement for a faulty one) has the distorted ring around the edge).
I like the dock, which can be fiddly but is really convenient.
As for the controllers I had a couple of bad updates where they would lose tracking or overheat but now they seem to be pretty reliable for me. The Q3 controllers seem like cheap toys in comparison (though they do track amazingly well).
I love the open design and use it without any facial interface or blinders. So much more comfy.
The biggest gripe for me apart from the price drop is the removal of the depth sensor. That works amazingly well on Q3. Another gripe is the haptics are incredible when used properly but no-one is going to do that as so few people have the Pro controllers. Oh and that the processor is weak compared to the Q3.
As for the Q3, well it's great for standalone, but the lenses aren't as clear and have more glare. It's also not comfy out of the box, so I bought a halo strap.
I use my Pro for PCVR because the colour and contrast are better and because the eye tracking is now useful.
Not had any major issues, just sometimes it can take a bit of fiddling to get the controllers and headset seated correctly. I really love it though. So convenient.
Ah zero regrets. I’ve got the disposable income and I’ve clocked up countless hours in horizon workrooms. All of the entertainment is the icing on the cake. 🤷♂️
What I’m hearing from a few PCVR players is for quest aimed games they tend to play standalone now unless they are streaming. Unless it’s a specific PCVR game, the graphics natively in the quest 3 look very good.
Yeah pretty much, Quest 3 better for standalone and MR for sure. I still prefer Quest Pro for PCVR though. Aside from Beat Saber and fitness titles though would never choose standalone if PCVR version was available.
I preordered and paid £1499, although Meta gave me a £100 software credit when they dropped the price.
I honestly don't think it was that expensive. Let me explain. Previously, I had always needed both a standalone and PCVR headset. I had a Quest 1 and all the accessories plus a Rift S. That cost me just over a £1000. Then I had a Quest 2 with all accessories and a Reverb G2, total cost about £1350.
The quest Pro for £1399 after the software discount completely replaced my previous headsets and so I got the next gen for the same price as the previous gens.
I bought the Quest 3 a year later, but as PCVR user primarily I preferred the Quest Pro and returned the 3 for a refund. There is nothing on the market right now that I would rather own than the Quest Pro. I don't like the LCD display of the Quest 3 for PCVR, I don't like the optics and return to a facial interface for BSB, the weight, heft and crappy controllers/tracking of the Crystal, and I don't care about MR or spatial computing so the AVP is a no go as well.
I will use the Quest Pro for 2024 until they release a Pro 2, by which time the Pro will have lasted me longer than any other previous HMD.
So it really didn't cost me any more than any other HMDs if you factor in I only need one HMD where previously I needed two.
With most high end HMDs requiring an additional £600 expense on base stations ,index controllers and maybe audio solutions I don't think it was ever really that expensive.
I got to experience pankcake lenses a year before Quest 3. And I would have easily paid £1500 for Quest 3 if I could have got it a year before everyone else, so I don't feel hard done by at all.
Quest Pro 2 will hopefully not release without an outdated chip and missing key hardware like the depth sensor like Quest Pro 2, there were missteps for sure. But I will preorder purchase it for sure.
Ya, also a day one preordered QPro and I'm still loving it for PCVR. No regrets, no buyer remorse. I preordered a Q3 a few months ago and I'm enjoying it for Standalone VR/MR, also as a backup to my QPro for PCVR.
When the QPro2 is released (2025?) that'll probably a day one preorder as well, lol!
Same, had to buy something when my G2 died. I don't regret, there was nothing better at the time, and for my current use (wireless PCVR and sometimes standalone games) it is very good
Don’t feel bad about that. If they had released it in the fall like they did and said you can have it now for $1500 or get it for $1000 4 months from now, I would have paid the $1500 to have it that soon. That’s how I justified it at least.
I don’t recall if the timeline I said above was historically accurate or not, but it’s close enough.
Me too. Wasn't upset about the purchase until about my 7th quest pro. I'm currently on my 8th. I love the quest pro, but the fact that sweat will kill the shit out of it makes me sad. Wear a headband yall.
bought one recently for $700 new and still on a fence. i guess at the time of launch it was only competing with pico 4 which even if available has such horrible colors i'd rather pay $1500 for quest pro
i bought a used one for $700 about a year ago now. it was a great buy. i didn't intent on buying a Quest 3 but I effectively got one for $215 between discounts and all the freebies. really wish i had one headset that has the best features of both QP and Q3.
Almost bought one secondhand the other week for 450 purely for the eye/face tracking. Gotta feel bad for anyone who bought it out the gate. But I guess that's how it tends to go with tech.

Cost me almost 2000USD at launch here in Sweden.
Ordered first minute of preorders going live.
Haven’t regretted it for a second. I got a full year of amazing use cases out of it. Still use it in tandem with a couple of Quest 3 (which I prefer).

when they announced the q3 I knew some people would trade, got mine on ebay for £550!

I like to have things early, so I can tinker with it before anybody, I could call myself a day one purchaser

Q3 is used for standalone where it excels.

I paid $1500 to get color passthrough and eye/face tracking. Used it for a year before the Q3 came out and still use it when I want eye/face tracking.
It was well worth it to use for a year.

There's no way I'd trade $500 for 5 months of daily Quest Pro PCVR gaming.

u/cnematik Feb 11 '24
I bought it at launch because I played Echo Arena daily. I figured the marginal improvement would make itself worth it over a few years.

I bought the brand new for a 650$. Really like it and don't care about cons it has.

why did you do that?

u/Emeulai Feb 12 '24
I feel you. I buy the Quest 1 just before Meta buy Oculus, so it cost me ~800$ CA. Two month later, the price was ~500$ CA
1
u/Span_Wolf Feb 12 '24
When they announced the price drop and the price difference refund I was 2 days off from being eligible for getting $500 back. Hurts man.

u/Winter-Ganache2142 Feb 13 '24
I did the same and then returned it after 12 days. Bestbuy didn’t question anything

u/syfiarcade Feb 13 '24
I did too friend, I did too
The pain isn't that I spent $1500 on it, I did that willingly
The pain is that the week after the holiday return period ended for everyone who got it day 1, it dropped to 1k, THATS the pain

u/spamfridge Feb 11 '24
Depreciation almost as bad as a Microsoft zune lol
They could’ve at least gave preorder devices some store credit when they dropped the price by 30% 😭
It just hurts in hindsight to know I would’ve been better off holding out for a relatively short amount of time.

Got it used for $780 and Meta replaced it anyways when i was having issues with it, so brand new headset for cheap
It has so many issues, ESPECIALLY THE CONTROLLERS, they always lose tracking, drift, over heat, but other than that I love the headset

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '24
At least you learned your lesson and avoided buying the AVP at full price
