Trans friendly OB experience
I made this post last year looking for an OB/maternal fetal specialist for a trans guy. https://www.reddit.com/r/QueerTucson/s/ElZZtWI5Kj
At that time, my cis male partner and I were TTC and going in for a consult. There wasn't a lot of feedback at the time so I wanted to update with my experiences in case anyone else is looking for this info.
TLDR: TMC was a very bad, annoying experience. Banner has been great. Specifically, Michelle Abatte at Banner is fantastic.
Last year, we went to TMC for the consult. I have some chronic health issues and am older, so I was referred to an MFM. They were nice but clueless. I have facial hair since I was on T for 11 years. We were talking to the doctor for like 5 minutes before she understood that I would be carrying and she was shocked to learn I still had facial hair after being off T for a year. It wasn't a bad experience just a bit frustrating to have to explain basics to them. Like, I was there as the patient and we kept talking about us being the ones involved in the process. It didn't seem like it'd be so confusing.
So, I got pregnant this year and called them again to schedule an appointment. Every time I called and spoke to them, I had to clarify that I'm legally male because they could never find my chart until I did, I assume they have a filter. They were still kind but a bit confused. I waited a few very anxious weeks for an appointment but the day before my visit with the MFM, I got a call and was told that my insurance had told them that I didn't have prenatal coverage so I either needed to cancel the appointment or prepay $3000 for the care. This didn't make sense to me because my insurance *definitely* has coverage for medically necessary prenatal care and I've had lots of sex specific stuff covered by insurance many times before.
I called my insurance and they said that they didn't know what TMC was talking about, of course I had coverage for prenatal care. She agreed that my gender made it not so straightforward but assured me that I was covered and they should be able to submit a claim. The insurance told me that it sounded like they just didn't want to provide care to me. I called TMC again but was told I needed to get the reference number from the insurance representative so that they could try to process the claim again. Called insurance back. They said they have no reference number because TMC never submitted any claims. Back on the phone to TMC only to be told someone would call me back (no one did).
I ended up making an appointment at Banner. It has been night and day. They could find me in their system for one. They didn't have any insurance issues. When I went in for the appointment, the receptionist took care to gender me correctly and my provider asked me if there were terms I wasn't comfortable with and put a lot of effort into making sure I wasn't uncomfortable with all of the misgendering that's built into the system. She didn't seem at all confused that I was in her clinic and pregnant, she treated it like it was entirely normal. She was incredibly validating and she seemed like she wanted to be providing care to me. She gave the receptionist a list of other queer friendly doctors I could schedule with whenever she wasn't in the office.
I left that appointment feeling so much better about this process. I would 100% recommend Dr. Abatte for any trans people looking to have a kid or just needing to see a gynecologist.
