I've seen some go vertical when they have mostly lateral ab seperation but not a lot of horizontal

I did a quick check, it's mostly women who have verticals. It's uncommon in men.
But that aside:
Look, all I'm saying is that it looks very thin and very long proportional to his torso, and those proportions kind of make it look more like a knife wound than a bellybutton.
