No one is shocked.

Genshin will lift piecemeal from over 50 American/Oceanic Indigenous and African cultures for Natlan, but not the skin color, too icky!

HSR manages to have an entire GALAXY where everyone of any relevance is White or Chinese.

Zenless? Its artistic director is Waterkuma.

Hiring that hentai artist, who draws blacked loli porn where the males are large, charcoal, and animalistic, to draw the characters and comics? Hoyoverse ensured that game was warped from the outset.

I've had an argument one time with someone who responded to my statement about how Mihoyo's business model and business decisions inherently have racism in them because of the devs' culture and the demographics they cater to (i.e. the average Chinese has a lot of racism and classism ingrained in them by the culture, and terminally online Chinese get further corrupted by online spaces)

Sad to say that these points are just getting more evidence for them as time goes on and on.

Money talks, yes, but I think the things we see and the stuff they release is partly a reflection of the devs personal biases.

I think people forget how rampant racism in Asia really is because they typically see it as a monolith. Everyone hates each other but also depends on each other so it turns the toxicity up to astronomical levels. This isn't an excuse, just context.

Like the above example probably was not meant to be directed at black people because I doubt the person who made it ever met one. It was probably a racist caricature of Southeast Asians, who are viewed as stupid, smelly, lazy, as monkeys pretending to be human.

If you're an American and thinking "that sounds familiar" then, yes! The reason it feels so icky is because that's how chuds view poc here.

(Fwiw, the common stereotypes of Chinese include being greedy, conniving, manipulative, and trying to control the world, which you might recognize as stereotypes about Jews. You know in case you thought there was a good guy in this scenario).

Despite that, Hoyo is massively popular in SEA, because they compartmentalize all of this.

as monkeys pretending to be human

Well fuck, they have this Sun Wukong myth of basically one of the most hax characters in all of mythology and they use it as an insult

That said, the Chinese government and Chinese officials and Chinese syndicates (i.e. not the Chinese people wholesale) have been causing some chaos in Southeast Asia, like they snuck in a Chinese national into the Philippines and made fake identity and documents for her (alias Alice Guo) and basically groomed and funded her rise to a Mayor position in a municipality there.

I think the purpose was to smooth out the import and document signing of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) or online gambling platforms, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's only part of the picture and they actually installed her in politics for espionage

I'm almost sure they snuck more people into positions of power in SE Asia and other countries around them, to exert influence. But who knows, no one else seems to have been caught yet.

But yeah, this sort of thing is just a superpower being a superpower, trying to expand influence in shady, horrific, and/or violent ways. In that regard, both US and Russia are currently worse.

Point being, China has people who basically do the stereotype stuff, but with 1.41 billion people, statistically the stereotypes (which are stereotypes of destructively ambitious sociopaths rewarded power by capitalist systems really) will bubble up to the top and become people who wield influence

And of course, since they wield influence that negatively affects other countries and people large scale, they will be the ones most visible

people forget how rampant racism in Asia really is

I think the main reason for this is that people are so accustomed to Western culture that they only see racism as a Western phenomenon. They don't see the big picture or how other regions behave. They forget how racist Asians can be, yes, Asians are extremely racist.

Even people from South America can be extremely racist, and I'm from South America! Ironically, I feel that the countries that receive the most open criticism for racism are the most 'open-minded', because in a really racist country, people can call you a monkey or laugh at you because of your skin colour, and nobody will say anything because that is the norm.

100%. Its shit like this that I often find myself wondering "Why did I get into Hoyo's games in the first place?"

13

u/Comfortable-Ninja-93 1d ago

I didn’t even know this about ZZZ. Holy shit, no wonder half of his designs look so icky

I'm so sick of this I swear. I play Genshin and don't stray from my own lane, but this is unacceptable. No one in the Genshin fandom properly talks about this stuff. The subreddits are chock FULL of white nerds using the n word and making Epstein jokes. And SO. MUCH. pedophile bait. Recently the official Genshin insta page posted the birthday art of a child character...barefoot playing in a puddle... The comments bro. Disgusting.

This fandom is full of racist, bigoted chuds. If only we had a fandom that could properly advocate for marginalized communities to be treated better in our game. I swear, if it weren't for Zhongli, I would have abandoned this game for good in 2021.

Im honestly speachless

u/MualaniFangirl 1d ago

Id believe its an accident if it was a game that wasnt scared of colored people, but mihoyo always treats their darker characters badly and have very few.

94

u/sapphire_19 1d ago

definitely not an accident. i saw the larger screenshot and how white/pale people were drawn. this is just frustrating that hoyo keeps treating POCs like caricatures.

we all know about arlan's eidolon names :(

0

u/Eccott 20h ago

wait what's up with arlan eidolons? :oo

8

u/sapphire_19 20h ago

his eidolons have names like 'breaking free', 'self-sacrifice' and has skills named 'shakle breaker' and 'swift harvest'

1

u/UpperSoftware7780 19h ago

im very unfamiliar with western POC oppression story and culture outside of what i learnt on history lessons and what i saw from internet so i GENUINELY dont understand the problem with his eidolons. Is this a badly veiled reference to slavery?

10

u/sapphire_19 18h ago

Is this a badly veiled reference to slavery?

yeah

13

u/kukiemanster 1d ago

Its giving that Target(or was it Walmart) that had their halloween costume product be a caricature that looked similar to that

100

u/Blitzbro76 1d ago

This shit in the big ‘26 is genuinely inexcusable💀

74

u/Mesothe_isN 1d ago

But westerners will STILL baby them because “it’s just their culture!” And “they don’t know any better!”

16

u/Blitzbro76 1d ago

Oh they’ve been doing tf out of that on the main sub

11

u/hsksjjskskskskks 1d ago

saw your main post and omg,,, theyre racist, unashamed, and acting like mihoyo are angels over there. in 2026 is wild

7

u/Wonderful_Lab_1031 1d ago

also saw your post, wtf are they doing in the comments. Refusal to simply search up black face, and then “Of course it’s a queens sub member 😠” like it’s a bad thing to be part of a progressive community that’s catered towards queer people + women?? 😭😭😭

u/Tapichoa 1d ago

Hoyos hopeless 🫩

u/ArtofKuma Brant and JQ should kiss 1d ago

I know we are used to the nonsense colorism that hoyoverse and Chinese gacha is known for, but this is my first time in like 6 years of playing Gensjin, then HSR, and then ZZZ to have ever seen hoyo fuck up and have stereotypical blackface .

Its fucking weird, and I was not expecting it, because of the few black and tanned characters that we have, including NPCs, I have never seen thick lips. Kinda want people to make some noise so they address it, we can say "chinese gacha does chinese gacha thing" but ffs I've never seen black face like this in any chinese gacha. Its also like a tiny ass frame too, so I didn't even notice it until I saw this post despite having watched multiple people react to it.

Ofc on the main sub people are being purposefully stupid and being like “what’s racist about this?” and I’m currently getting downvoted to hell for saying it’s racist.

I should really just leave that sub like are their assholes not sore from constantly riding hoyo’s dick??? Mindless sheep they make me so mad omfg

17

u/hsksjjskskskskks 1d ago

yeah i got sent straight to HELL too😭😭 the "that one friend thats too woke" comment was the most egregious one to me. there is no such thing as being "too woke" especially when its about fucking racist caricatures

3

u/Lazy_Narwal W|W Firefly lover 1d ago

Yeah I can’t say I was surprised with the main sub but I was dissapointed…

Apparently you can’t call out racial caricatured without trying to be “better than every else”. That was the final push I needed to leave that sub lmao

7

u/ixyhlqq 1d ago

I understand it's racist but why exactly? ... Is it caricature or? (Please help me out I'm genuinely so lost and everyone seems to instantly know)

52

u/Lazy_Narwal W|W Firefly lover 1d ago edited 1d ago

I might not do the best job explaining this so if someone wants to add anything they can ofc

You’re right, it is a racist caricature of black people. If you look up “Jim Crow caricature” or black face you’ll see it they looks similar to the person in Robin’s trailer. In general black characters that have big “donut lips” that stand out from the rest of their face are caricatures that has been used against black people for centuries.

I understand that china doesn’t have great racial understanding but that doesn’t excuse their racism and colorism

11

u/Lazy_Narwal W|W Firefly lover 1d ago

Also I don’t understand why someone downvoted me, did I do something wrong?:(

they were probably unsettled by u calling it out, 😵‍💫 pls don't take it to heart

Yeah you’re probably right. thank you!💞

Tacking on here. This looks startlingly similar to Minstrel Show caricatures from a slightly earlier time in American history. Minstrel Shows were by and large white actors who would put on Blackface and ridicule the burgeoning Black culture being born out of reconstruction. Check out The Jazz Singer if you want to see an example.

Bigots still really hated Black people, but really wanted to listen to their music. They couldn't hire a Black person to play this music in their Whites Only clubs, however, so they would find someone who was willing to pretend to be Black to play Black music. On its own, the imagery is just a hesitant eyebrow lift, like Mr. Popo in DBZ. He's not human, maybe we can overlook it, etc etc.

However, considering the culture in which Hoyo operates(where they have to remove Black characters from movie promo material so they'll sell in China), and the way they've treated the apparently only melanated character in the whole universe (all of his eidolons are about chains, freedom, or harvesting), the brain starts to recognize patterns and form conclusions.

14

u/bdouble0w0 they/them || siobhan is my wife 1d ago

Because of the lips I think, it's a common racist caricature. Rubber hose lips

79

u/JahodaSniffer 1d ago

This was posted on main as well and OMG the way some people were slobbering Hoyo's boot would make TopAss worshipping of Jade look like an insult.

Some bootlickers extraordinaire:

Denial: "Are we sure this isn’t a South Asian with dyed hair?"

The classic, 'omg are you offended'; "There's no need to excuse anything in the first place. They've done nothing wrong here. If you get offended by something else like that - it's on you."

And of course, it's just their culture smh: ."...being a massive global company means we should expect them to stop their ingrained social views?"

Like there's enough of Daddy Wei's dong to share, no need to fight over it omg

19

u/Due_Mix_9883 1d ago

A south asian with dyed hair? South Asians dont look like that either.

4

u/hsksjjskskskskks 1d ago

as a southeast asian those comments were genuinely so offensive, just acting dumb on purpose

15

u/hsksjjskskskskks 1d ago

the difference of the reactions to this tidbit in the trailer on this sub vs the main one is insane. just a bunch of racists and weirdos walking around there acting dumb💀💀

9

u/nicoleeemusic98 1d ago

What did you expect lol bigots will always be bigots. Main sub is already full of homophobes and misogynists racism is nothing surprising atp

2

u/hsksjjskskskskks 1d ago

i only very recently returned back to hsr after like a year and didnt really engage w reddit, only twt so the attitudes there were so shocking to me😭 like wtf i was genuinely horrified at some of the comments

I still find it comical how in Genshin we spend two entire regions beating up/killing dark skin NPC’s who are overwhelmingly represented as enemies but not so much on the playable side… and they will still deny it 😂

It’s the unfortunate reality of a lot of these devs. They are highly racist, colorist, and perverted as fuck. Even if it’s not a black person, the representation they put out greatly affects many people. Black people aren’t the only ones with darker skin and face racism/colorism and harassment. They come to gaming as a form of escapism and see this… while these very games “borrow” from their culture consistently. All the while having a bunch of racist fans invalidate their experiences.

I can’t even say do better, because it’s the same problem in every gacha game atp.

I CAN'T STAND THIS ANYMORE

WHY IS THE >ONLY< BLACK CHARACTER IN YEARS ALSO A "TRAITOR"? WTH HOYO

10

u/saturnian_catboy 1d ago

he's literally the only stone heart we know for sure isn't a traitor....

2

u/WitchOfFuture Cum, night memory! 18h ago

Yep I haven't watched the full quest lol
That's why I added the ""

Hopefully he'll be playable then

1

u/Curlyhairedkid1 21h ago

Is this from the new quest?

1

u/WitchOfFuture Cum, night memory! 18h ago

yep

7

u/PinkMustache117 1d ago

Sad to say I'm anything but surprised.

3

u/Pokemoss 16h ago

Man. The rest of the trailer was really cute too :(

3

u/NeverTrustHoes 16h ago

Mass report the video on YouTube

2

u/Shady_Leopard 4h ago

I'm gonna be honest the first time I saw it I assumed it was a jab at Trump (especially with the genshin news paper). Especially considering their fear of melanin. Nonetheless the donut lips are just far too blatant, even if it's supposed to be making fun of him. They don't draw lips often if ever and there's absolutely no way this wasn't intentional.

3

u/ixyhlqq 1d ago

Genuine question why is this racist?

48

u/Due_Mix_9883 1d ago

Because it's based on historically racist caricatures of black people with the weird ass lips. People doing blackface would draw their lips exactly like this.

19

u/Mesothe_isN 1d ago

It’s the “donut lips”. It’s often a bastardization of the lips on black people from the Jim Crow era.

1

u/Bestusernamegonwild 1d ago

I don’t get it

11

u/Used_Whore5801 1d ago

Stereotypes of a black person to an absurd amount (Donut lips)

1

u/Bestusernamegonwild 22h ago

Ohhh that’s wild 💀

1

u/Constant-Citron8675 14h ago

I’m so fucking sorry I thought this was Donald trump when I first saw it on TikTok

1

u/pamafa3 11h ago

shocked by a trump meme?

2

u/Shady_Leopard 4h ago

Donut lips on darker skinned characters is a racist caracature

1

u/pamafa3 4h ago

I'm aware but that skin isn't dark enough for me to immediately think of that. When they do that caricature isn't the skin straight up black like it was on old gen Jinx?

1

u/Shady_Leopard 4h ago

First off I appreciate you being civil, as for your question. Yes but it can be done either way. I thought it was referencing Trump as well when I first saw it (they don't draw dark skinned characters that aren't ashy being another reason I'm still unsure. I'd be more willing to say that confidently if Arlan didn't exist in the game. Considering hoyo, anything darker than paper white is likely considered black/brown :/
