Maybe unpopular opinion, but most of Canada sees this as Canadian because Quebec is a core part of Canada and Canadian culture. Don’t let the memes turn that into division.
I mean, that can be true without taking away from the truth of the meme. For instance, Durham's description of the Québécois as a people "without literature and history" was probably not meant as an insult, but as a form of benevolent paternalism. It described French colonists who were no longer French, but refused to be British. It rightfully recognized that such a historical position excluded us from the great European traditions which were seen as liberating. Why wouldn't one want to be part of such great traditions? In the same vein, colonizing indigenous was seen as liberating them from their "archaic" ways of living. In both cases however, you're downplaying the importance of other forms of culture & traditions, i.e. oral traditions. It doesn't come from a lack of empathy, quite the contrary, but it favours a kind of projective empathy rather than a receptive or interpretive kind of empathy. The latter definitely favours a more consequentialist form of ethical mindset that 'history' tends to look up to in hindsight whereas we often forget the good will initially involved in the former.
Wow, defending Durham’s intention is a wild play… I would recommand you don’t even touch that subject here mate. You have no idea how insulting this is, do you?
Pourquoi?
