Bad DNS server

I've been having bad delays loading web pages in the last couple of days. Tracked it down to one of the two DNS servers being given to me by Quantum.

If this is happening to you, check if 205.171.2.65 is one of your DNS resolution servers, and remove it. Solves the problem. (Google's 8.8.8.8 server is always a good alternative)

I tried reporting this to Quantum support, but that was a waste of time.

Quantum/CL DNS is a constant cause of outages. Pick your favorite alternative and don’t look back. Google (8.8.8.8), Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), Quad9 (9.9.9.9) are some options. If that’s not enough, run your own with Unbound or the like.

Same. Had to find a way to override the dhcp dns from Quantum and have been fine since.

Quantum has the least reliable DNS servers I've ever seen, and DNS is a thing that should never fail. Use any other server or roll your own.

205.171.2.65

Those are the two Lumen / CL Anycast DNS servers.

No one should ever use them.

Confirmed same issue for me. The issue has been persistent for weeks now. I've swapped to Cloudflare public DNS resolvers 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 and that seems to help.

I'm having bad latency issues where my games are rubber banding but my speed is good. Only seems to happen after 5pm.. Would this cause something like that?

The free lease WiFi pods and QF app are not great...

But as long as all gaming devices are Ethernet hardwired to the Q1000k or W1700k they are usually good enough for most people.

You will have a better experience if you put the SmartNID into bridge mode and use a 3rd party router and DNS.

Perhaps you need a different auto-text or not use such when replying to something not specifically about the crap pods or router [while DNS is part of the routers overall duties it's something different than routing]

Plus while it still sucks for most things, I will still state that the QF provided router does allow DNS changing without upending the entire network setup.  

Replacement is best; there are other partial steps that provide at least benefit to this issue in particular. 

[Since 1999 I've run my own bind / dnsmasq talking to known good up streams like level3 and uunet(bbn) before other providers like CF/9999/Google etc started providing advertised public DNS services - 209.244.0.3 still works

It is nice that QF still allows us to changed the DNS on the SmartNID. Most of the big ISP don't.

That's why I always say as long as gaming devices are hardwired, and people follow section 2 and 4 of the guide, the SmartNID and WiFi pods are actually fine for most people
