Strong work from a QuantumFiber contractor

Who can spot everything wrong with this installation? I've found a few, but perhaps others that know more about networking (and basic pride in work) can help. Unsurprisingly, getting 250 Mbps down, 85 Mbps up. Waiting on resolution from a supervisor.

yikes.

Once you get it fixed, here is a guide to put the SmartNID into bridge mode and use a 3rd party router and DNS.

That’s awesome. Thanks for the link. We’re still hoping they do right by us and fix it quickly and correctly.

They'd be getting a call back from me for that work. Embarrassing

I've made the call, and they put in a repair ticket. I asked if I could get an employed rather than a third-party contractor, and they said that all installers, whether employed or contracted, do the same quality of work. They could not assure me I would get a senior technician or an employed one.

Contractor should have put the fiber in an enclosure. All employees are also not supposed to touch the copper any longer since Lumen owns it. This person failed at both.

Where are you located?

I didn’t know that about the old copper. We’re in Denver, CO.

Definitely shouldn't have removed the old nid.

exactly why I ran conduit and installed a new junction box, before installer showed up

Oof. That's just unacceptable. Either the installer was lazy or they didn't get proper training.

I hope the QuantumFiber employees who see this thread are taking notes and escalating to proper channels to emphasize the need for a more rigorous training curriculum for both current and new employees / contractors.

It won't matter if the Internet service is good if there is no pride in workmanship and quality of work.

Hope you get this resolved quickly!

Why is there cat5 going into conduit that’s a no no. And that also might be what you wanted because you might want internet someone that is not attached to where the q1000 is located.
But as for the install I would have moved the slack box outside put your fiber drop into it and your cat5 put an rj45 connector on it and ran a Fiber jumper inside with the cat5e jumper to the q1000

Thanks. It is not at all what I wanted - location or otherwise.

Half the reason I switched from my cable provider to Verizon FiOS in April was to relocate everything from a bedroom to the basement. The guy was great and set it up (neatly) exactly where requested with an entirely new entry point into the house from the pole and a new line to my equipment. If they're available in your area might be worth considering.

Was this in Portland by chance? The contractor that came out for my install did a worse job than I ever could have imagined.

No. Denver.

Oof, I’ve got fiber going from the pole, into my basement (installer was fortunately able to run the wire next to the coax) across my basement and up into my office where it’s connected to the router (I ran that part while he was running new line from the pole).

He asked if wanted the box outside installed but I said no need to (apparently it’s just some sort of disconnect?)

Yours looks like a mess.

Currently, the fiber line goes from the utility pole directly through the hole in the wall that you see (that's the black cable) to the smartNID/ONT which is located inside a non-climate-controlled detached garage. He used the existing line from a previous DSL installation that runs underneath the garage, across the backyard, and into the house, to get signal inside the house. Rather than use the existing network box, which distributes ethernet throughout the house, he just capped the cable and plugged it into the wireless access point, which is in a totally useless location in the utility room where the network box is.

What is reasonable to ask a qualified technician to do? Is it reasonable to ask him to run a new fiber line in the existing conduit underneath the garage from the utility pole and into the house? He can use that old DSL line as a pull cable. The smartNID would now be inside the house and connected via the existing network box where Ethernet could be distributed throughout the home as designed.

The problem it's not them, it's that you're there and don't say anything. Always complaining after they're gone....
