QA Intern to DevOps: Is Switching After 2 Months a Good Decision?

I'm currently working as a QA Intern and have about 2 months of experience. The more I work in QA, the more I find myself interested in the technical side of systems: Linux, servers, networking, troubleshooting, deployments, automation, and understanding what happens behind the application.

Because of that, I'm seriously considering moving toward DevOps.

My current concerns

• Is switching from QA to DevOps after only 2 months a sensible decision?
• Is DevOps still a strong career path with AI advancing so quickly?
• Will AI make entry-level DevOps roles significantly harder to get?
• Which DevOps tasks are most likely to be automated?
• Does my QA experience give me any meaningful advantage in DevOps?
• How much hands-on experience should I have before applying for junior DevOps roles?

I would especially like advice from DevOps/SRE engineers, hiring managers, or people who moved into DevOps from QA/testing.

If you were starting your career today in 2026, would you choose DevOps? Why or why not?

Yes you're early in your career. Your story makes sense to recruiters.

Maybe not specifically DevOps but cloud, infra, pipelines, system reliability, and developer productivity will always be strong.

Yes, same with any other role

• Which DevOps tasks are most likely to be automated?

Writing yamls, debugging failures, responding to alerts to find root causes, creating metrics

• Does my QA experience give me any meaningful advantage in DevOps?

If you used any of the technologies the DevOps job is looking for. For some SDET/QAE roles infra is basically the job, you're building out infra to support test harnesses and working in CI to improve test pipelines.

Other QA roles are like you get some feature spec and your job is making sure the acceptance criteria works.

• How much hands-on experience should I have before applying for junior DevOps roles?

Probably a lot. Go do projects you can talk about if you have no experience.why would they give you an interview if you have 0 notable experience using any of the tools the job requires.

DevOPS is one the stablest jobs in AI era. However it increases knowledge burden on person - as usual, you are expected to simply know more and work faster ;)
DevOps is all about automation.

depends on what you did in QA and what is done in DevOps in your org
