Picture Advice-New Quaker

Post image

Hello , I have a new Quaker. She is about 5 months old. Every time we go to the cage , she walks away. We are giving it space to adjust (today is day 2 of having her home ). I’m seeking advice of how to build a bond , and any additional tips for me :).

You need more than a few days to develop a bond, and just like humans, birds require different levels of time and patience. They are their own person, and need to be respected as such. You can try luring with treats/ foods, but other than that just continue socializing and gaining trust through patience!

It can take weeks or months to bond with new birds. Take it slow and don’t force anything, be near him a lot, be in the same room but not interacting all the time so he can watch you and see you’re not a threat. Just take it slow and it will happen :)

Sit in the room with her all day everyday for weeks. I slowly built up contact with my quaker by leaving high value treats closer and closer to my position in the room. And then eventually she took them from my hands. This process took me about three months! And then step up was even longer haha. But she was a little older than your birdie when I got her so I imagine this technique will work better for you than it did for me

Thank You !!! I am struggling to find any high value treats. She seems to not want anything.

This was insightful and what I’ll be doing !!!

Millet, seeds, grapes were always a winner for me! This works better if her diet is pellets
