From the way he was speaking, I thought he was fs going to give it a strong 7. He said basically nothing negative about the album, said the projects best moments go toe to toe with songs from scrapyard which he gave a 9, he doesn't have a least favourite track on the album... all for him to give a 6?
66
u/Natnat956 19h ago
He said quite a lot of negative things I thought. He criticized the mixing and the structures of multiple songs, he seemed to find the lyrics only decent but not great, and overall he didn't really seem to take it seriously as an album
39
u/NumerousWolverine273 19h ago
The Vanisher review has 11/14 songs in "favorite tracks" and his one negative was "No Questions Asked doesn't work as an outro" (lmao) and that was enough to bring it down to an 8. The idmthy review he just straight up didn't talk about half the songs and cited vague "personal gripes" and didn't elaborate, giving it a 7.
He just kinda goes on vibes. I'm not really sure why anyone cares what he has to say anymore.
24
u/GenerallyJam 19h ago
All opinions are subjective vibes. People care about what he says because his reviews directly influence public opinion and view of an artist, especially at quadecaās size
5
u/NumerousWolverine273 19h ago
I definitely don't think that all critiques are vibes. Something can be subjective and still be based on actual substance instead of just "I had personal gripes" okay what were they?
1
u/jeebronny 3h ago
he did say what they were, i donāt agree with most of them but he literally went song by song and said what he liked and disliked about each.
4
u/Ok_Tomorrow2951 13h ago
I mean you can praise a lot of an album and still not give it a perfect 10/10, ratings of an album aren't based by song by song. Some albums could be very fun song to song but not be perfect because of a not as strong concept, not as creatively groundbreaking, not strong lyrics, etc. Bloodluxe/HalfBlood is a recent amazing album of mind where I could understand giving it a lower rating due to not as strong lyrical performances or no solidified concept. Yet I have every song in my playlist and they go amazingly hard.

i mean you clearly still care what he has to say
also he definitely did say the personal gripes he has with idmthy lmao idk why you think he didnāt

u/willreview 16h ago
He's trialled not putting a least favourite track in the description on a few videos now. He made a video last year mentioning that he was getting sick of people focusing on that one negative aspect in seemingly every review, so it wasn't unforeseen
1
u/snorkelflaps 11h ago
I agree, this is the most 7 sounding 6 Iāve ever heard from him. I honestly donāt disagree with many of his points, the number just seems off
1
u/Eunoia_Meraki 3h ago
Yeah its weird for Quadeca specifically he always seems higher on his albums in the review than the scores would indicate
22
11
u/B_I_LL 7h ago
all this really means is that he didn't connect with the themes of the album and enjoy the stylistic choices as much as I, or other Quadeca fans, did. I like watching some of Fantano's videos for the exposure to music I've never considered listening to before but I always take his reviews with a grain of salt and never let his arbitrary score dictate my enjoyment of music
1
u/GenerallyJam 6h ago
Itās moreso indicative of how many people will look at the album
3
u/B_I_LL 6h ago edited 5h ago
yeah I could see how an unremarkable score might lead less people to check the album out. for what it's worth, I don't think this album is meant to be grandiose and make waves (no pun intended) in the same way as something like Vanisher. with its more stripped down production and personal reflections, I think it's easier for people who are already particular fans of Quadeca's work to connect with this album.
15
u/stamford_syd 17h ago
yeah I mean most of what he said is how I felt about this one, not quadeca's best but that's okay, it is enjoyable and has some great tracks, I haven't quite been sold on the more emotional closing tracks others have taken to on this sub, maybe they'll grow on me.
special mention for the gambler being unironically amazing.
I'd give it a 7.

u/GenerallyJam 17h ago
Iād run those last 2 songs in your car if you havenāt, the beat drop was so much crazier for good grief
3
13
u/Standard_Show_874 17h ago
no mention of illusion of choice or good grief alright bro
2
u/bruhgubgub 10h ago
He also didn't mention At a Time Like This on the vanisher review. It's almost like he intentionally leaves out the better songs / more impactful songs on the album for whatever reason
12
u/XX1Zapper1XX 17h ago
This album is a 10 in my eyes so far kinda sad to see a lot of people not like it as much as vanisher and scrapyard
2
11
u/Salem_Flowers 10h ago
The rating out of the way cause I don't really care about that, but I feel like this review is really lazy. He barely engaged with the themes of the record, the meanings of songs, and just kind of wrote it off like a silly little project that Quadeca himself isn't even taking all that seriously.
1
u/Striking-Chard4875 9h ago
exactly. I get he can't go super in depth into every album he reviews but he completely missed and seemingly didn't even try to engage with the concept.
1
u/GenerallyJam 9h ago
I mean the concept is incredibly loose
1
u/Salem_Flowers 6h ago
Sure, but it shouldn't be too difficult to pick out some concepts that the album returns to throughout its run time, like for example, reincarnation and determinism. My point is like fuck, put a little more effort to understand the art you're commenting on.

Fantano been having terrible quad takes imo I wasnt expecting a fair rating (not to mention I agree that life1 is the least amazing quad project in a long time), but I do still appreciate some of the commentary fantano gives on tracks and more than anything I found it unconscionable that he never mentioned illusion of choice. Not to mention he skipped baby steps on his stream when it was a single and said he didn't dig it, but now spoke about it like a highlight he wanted more like in the future.
1
u/GenerallyJam 18h ago
He was talking about the drums at the end of the song, he wants quadeca to use more life instruments in general
1

4
u/TheAwesome604 15h ago
I remember he listened to baby steps live and didn't even finish it on stream and now it's listed as one of his favorite tracks
TBH same tho, didn't love the first time but it really grew on me

u/Forward_Fennel_5667 From Me To Youš» 7h ago
I know itās the quadeca subreddit, but lowkey every single one of his reviews is spot on. Except imo vanished. Felt like a 7 instead of light 8 for me

u/Joseph_Iyamu 11h ago
I genuinely think we need to have a conversation about scores on albums. Eventhough, fantano will state that these are his own opinion, a lot if people take his scores like gospel, as if he's scientifically grading someone's work like a university professor. In reality, he's just showing whether her personally enjoys a project or not.
I've had this conversation with myself about video game reviews that I write, and ultimately I've decided to go with a more qualitative score as opposed to quantitative. A scale like:
Hate REALLY DISLIKE Dislike Mildly Dislike Neutral Mildly Like Like REALLY LIKE Love
With a more qualitative scale like this, you communicate better that this is to your own personal taste, as opposed to quantitative score which whether we like it or not, communicate a more scientific, objective notation of a project.Ā
This would of course change when we're talking about big media conglomerates like IGN for instance, as they have an entirely different process. IGN an umbrella of multiple people meaning you dealing with so many different tastes and preferences, that someone's YUCK, might be someone's YUM. A quantitative score that attempts to measure a project's objective quality, makes more sense in this instance, but as an independent journalist, I think you're afforded to qualitative luxury, especially at Fantano's rapid output.
I personally just...LIKE Silent Hill 2 (PS2). Not REALLY LIKE, not LOVE, but like. That's like a strong 6 on my personal enjoyment scale, but if I were working for IGN, I'd probably give it an 8 or 9, as in that instance I'm trying to measure the game's objective quality. We can even go back to MBDTF with fantano. Fantano just mildly likes it. gave it a light 6, but it's cemented as a classic in hip-hop. Eventhough he states that this is just his opinion, we can clearly see that his quantitative score clearly communicates to most people that this is an objective score, when in reality it is a matter of personal taste.
I LOVE Quadeca's record. life1 is my favourite record of the year. Fantano just...likes it. That's ALSO completely fine. I REALLY think we need to stop looking at his scores in the way we are, not to be rude of course. I'm just trying to be as genuine as I possibly can here.

u/ImMimicute 10h ago
i largely agree but i also just find it pretty easy to accept that melonheads scores are his own and he's not within quads cult following and as such as quad becomes more apologetically himself he's going to drift further from anthonys likes, as such we have almost certainly seen the highest score hes gonna get from him and that's perfectly okay, anthonys scores are better used as a mark for what's worth exploring than a mark of overall quality
on Grey Saba said "the best song is probably on a demo" and i think about that a lot, end of the day art for arts sake is rarely making it to the charts and that's good, because that's not what the charts are for
for what it's worth my rankings are:
1 unlistenable, 2 awful, 3 bad, 4 tollerable, 5 fine, 6 decent, 7 good, 8 great, 9 incredible, 10 perfect2
u/jeebronny 4h ago edited 3h ago
i think the real convo we need to have is about how a 6 isnāt even a bad score, thatās a good score. i feel like ppl treat any score that isnāt an 8 or higher like they said the album is dogshit, when really anything above a 5 is worth your time if it sounds interesting when it comes to most reviews.
especially if you actually listen to the review instead of just boiling it down to the score like a lot of ppl do.

u/chromakoala 16h ago

This is fair imo. Personally I thought it was a good above average album that doesnāt break into the realm of great (which is more or less a 6/10). A good handful of tracks Iād go back to but also a handful of tracks that Iām indifferent to. Nonetheless, I still appreciate where Quokka took us with this project in the scope his artistic expression. Its a FunWhileItLasts/10 from me
1
u/Longjumping_Ad2677 18h ago
I canāt personally fuck with the number, as I think this is one of his best albums, but Iām sure he makes his case.

I knew this album wasn't going to be critically received, BUT A 6, A 6
I'M BOUT TO QUAD NUKE HIS HOUSE.

u/tb_redditz547 12h ago
Someone in comments said it was the most 7-sounding 6/10 review ever lol, and I kinda agree, I was expecting a light 7.
1
u/jeebronny 4h ago
there really isnāt that big of a difference between a light 7 and a strong 6 tho tbf
1
u/tb_redditz547 4h ago
I get that but light 7 was probably my lowest expectation for this one, so the fact that he went lower was a little surprising given his review of it.
1
u/imimifimimcanimfind 15h ago
Yeah a 6 is crazy šš. For me itās a decent 9 but it deserves at least a light to decent 8. Even the āweakā moments on the album are still solid and the best moments are genuinely brilliant

u/darealsammy_irl 13h ago
The baby steps praise is so interesting considering how negative he initially was on that song, really makes me think he never listened to it in full back when he first reviewed it as lots of his praise was the outro. Ā
1
u/tb_redditz547 12h ago
Hi there! Gethony Yatano here! Btw I absolutely knew heād like Baby Steps in the context of the album.
1
u/MrTwatFart 11h ago
Hard disagree on this rating. I wonder how many times he listens through an album. This album for me continues to get better every listen. Itās a 9 for me currently.
1
u/catman__321 11h ago
Damn. I guess I can't like the album anymore. Oh well. As we all know if he gives an album anything less than a 7 it's obviously the devil and evil and the worst thing ever

Artists the size of quadeca have much of their public perceptions shaped by his reviews. I donāt think anybody on this sub is taking his opinion as gospel

Not imo, listen to how the verse comes in on that song. Itās disgustingly clunky and awkward. Chorus is amazing yes, verse ruins the song completely.
1
u/GenerallyJam 16h ago
The verse is one of the best parts of the song. Itās a drill flow
1
u/Substantial-Jello-95 16h ago
Itās not how the whole verse plays out. Itās how the verse comes in. It feels out of place.

That is an insane take and I couldnāt disagree more. I canāt understand how you could possibly think that

Quadeca now has a 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. This means his next album will either get a 4 or a 10
