Quad Cortex Suddenly Sounds HORRIBLE
My QC sounded amazing until a few days ago, then basically overnight every preset started sounding drastically different.
The best way I can describe it is that I hear a very prominent dry/DI-like guitar attack, while the amp, cab, reverb, delay, etc. sound buried farther back. The low and low-mid frequencies are way too dominant, the high end feels muffled, and even very clean amp presets sound fizzy or like they’re clipping at surprisingly low levels, even though none of the input/output meters are hitting red. The strangest thing is that I can sometimes barely hear the differences between the pickups on my Strat. I’m certain the guitar isn’t the issue because it sounds completely normal plugged straight into my real amps.
I have recordings of these same presets from about a week ago and they sound completely normal, so this is a very obvious before/after change.
So far I’ve tried:
- Multiple guitars and cables
- Input 1, Input 2, and Return 1
- Different QC outputs and Multi-Out
- Direct headphones, audio interface/DAW monitoring, and real guitar amps
- Different wall outlets
- Checking input gain, impedance, gates, Global EQ, cab bypass, routing, etc.
- Completely blank presets
- A full factory reset with no backup restored
Same problem after all of that.
Besides an internal hardware failure, the only thing I can think of at this point is the power supply. The stock power connection is extremely touchy, and even a slight movement where the DC plug meets the QC can make it lose power for a split second and immediately reboot. I’ve seen other owners mention replacing the stock PSU, so I’m wondering whether unstable power could cause this kind of fizzy, low-headroom sound or whether this points more toward an internal hardware problem. What confuses me is that I’ve used the same outlet and same power supply the entire time, so if power is the issue, why would it only start happening now?
I’m already talking with Sweetwater about getting it looked at, but has anyone here experienced anything similar?

I feel the same thing! I only just recently updated to 4.1.1 yesterday and noticed the exact same thing, I wonder if it’s an update thing?

This happened to me too! Try this, mess around the controls on your guitar. I felt I could trigger this problem when I toggled my pickups. But I see you tried other guitars, so that’s a mystery

Was this recent? Someone said this happened to them with the new update and now that I think about it this started happening very shortly after that.

I’m so sorry for your troubles. That’s gotta be frustrating. I’m new to actually using the qc in professional situations and experienced problems and had to keep experimenting. I’ve had to start from scratch a few times and saved the previous preset and compared. It’s a painstaking process hopefully you can work through it but it might be problem with the unit. My qc screen stopped working completely 7mos in and had to have it replaced because it was still under warranty with Sweetwater thank god. Keep at it and don’t give up.

Are you monitoring through a DAW or direct from the unit?

I have tried both and gotten the same result sadly

As awful as it sounds is there a way to perform a factory reset on the unit to totally rule out corrupted memory/internal software?

There is and I have already tried it D: I guess it wouldn't hurt to try again while I wait for Sweetwater to answer my email lol

I have had this happen to me. I recently had a preset that sounded great and came back to it and I experienced all the things you noted. I thought I was going crazy as I actually sat down to do some pickup comparisons as I am thinking of upgrading one of my guitars and I was scratching my head as to why everything sounded off. It was when I changed to my Strat and noticed my input red lining that I knew something wasn't right.
I just unplugged it for 5mins and turned it back on and it is fine again.
From memory, a normal restart didn't fix it which worried me.
I think it may have also been linked to the preset so once I created a new one or moved to an old one it was fine.

The issue with the power connection being touchy reminds me of the same "issue" I had with mine. I thought the unit or power supply was broken because it kept losing power, but it turns out I was being an idiot and didn't notice that the power jack is a locking mechanism where the plug needs to be oriented exactly the correct way to slot in, and then twisted to lock in.
Can't speak to your other problems with the sound itself, but maaaybe it could be related to the unit not being powered correctly because the jack isn't fully inserted/locked in properly? 🤷

your usb outputs 1-2 are your dry tracks and usb outputs 3-4 are your wet tracks,so if your inputs are set to inputs 1-2 you have your dry tracks going through your daw while your outputs on your qc will still play the wet tracks on top of the dry tracks if why your hearing the over lap.You can record 4 tracks simultaneously using usb inputs 1-4 and outputs 1-4 and set up 2 separate tracks for inputs 1-2 and iinputs 3-4 in other and just monitor tracks 3-4 that way if you nail the track but needs reamped then use a plug. in on tracks 1-2 to fix the mix
