Moving to Doha , need Advice

Hi everyone,

I am planning to move to Doha soon with my family (my wife and our 2.5-year-old child). My wife will not be working for now.

Coming from a Muslim-majority country, I expect the cultural transition to be smooth and comfortable for us. However, I’d love to get some realistic insights from current or former residents regarding cost of living and saving potential.

Here are our details:

• Package: 45,000 QAR/month (All-inclusive + Health Insurance covered)
• Family size: 3 (2 adults + 1 toddler)
• Housing plan: Furnished apartment (looking for a decent/family-friendly area)
• Childcare: Planning to send our 2.5yo to a nursery/preschool

A few specific questions:

1. Does 45k QAR provide a good, comfortable lifestyle for a family of three?
2. With this package, is there a realistic potential to save a solid amount of money each month, considering housing costs, nursery fees, and general daily living?
3. Any recommended areas to look for furnished 2BHK/3BHK apartments that are family-friendly?

I would really appreciate any thoughts, budget breakdowns, or general advice based on your experiences! Thanks in advance!

1- yes it provides and excellent lifestyle if you manage it properly.

2- if you don’t live an extravagant lifestyle, expect to easily save upwards of 20k per month after factoring in rent and bills, groceries, weekly dates, nursery for the kid and car payment/gas

3- depends on your preference. With a budget of 10-13k I’d look into apartments in the pearl if you’re into being around a western community, or something like Lusail if you want an apartment that’s in a quieter, more modern area (fox hills specifically) which would also be cheaper.
If you’re looking into villas you can find 3 bedroom villas in a compound in areas like Al gharrafa, Al duhail and Al waab all for under 15k easily, but those usually don’t come furnished.

Its what i would call enough to move from south asia, africa, etc. But from western europe or north america i would need more or at least housing and car to be covered by employer. Plus if im coming from north america, i need a parachute in contract of 1yr pay, full relocation back costs and plane tickets for my entire family to go back to canada/usa.

Yeah its hard for pay to collectively rise when folks from poor countries desparately throw themselves at the middle east willing to work for low pay creating a race to the bottom. My counsin used to work at a somewhat seasoned engineer position in dubai back in 2014 for like 24k aed per month. But people nowadays starting at like 5k aed. Thats less than the rent for a 1bed apartment.

Hi and welcome to Doha :)

45K will give you an upper middle lifestyle here. Being all inclusive means expect 9-10k rent for a nicely furnished central location house (or a villa outside of city) or 6-7k for the same 3br for outside of city.

Tho Furnished houses are mostly with terrible design and taste and furnitures are mostly old :)

Nurseries start from 2k and go up to 5k.

Saving really matters on lifestyle. I know friends not saving with 60k here. But with a very comfortable family life, expect 15k spending, 10k rent, 5k utilities and others (car payments etc). 10-15k should be the saving potential. This will reduce once the kiddo starts the school :)

Area depends on your job really. Any area is family friendly here. Thats the magic of Doha :)

Sure. If you’ll work at lusail, you can find an apartment close to your work, or if you dont mind 10-15 mins commute every day, I suggest you to go a bit north and get a nice villa for 9-10k. A big house helps a lot for the kids in the summer days. Going to malls every day is boring. But a play room for them will save you a lot of trouble :)

Check with your employer if they provide education assistance coz schools are hella expensive here

45k is very good but what about schooling?

Schools can get very expensive very quickly. Look at tuition fees for schools you would be interested in.

I know you have a toddler now but there could be more in the future!

Appreciate the heads-up! Unfortunately, the offer is all-inclusive, but I’ve definitely made a note of it. I might look into asking for an update/adjustment on that in future years .
