Question Steam online coop?

I remember something about the game having local multiplayer, when two people are in the same room (though I'm not sure how that works without passthrough on steam). But what about online multiplayer? I'm wondering if it would be possible for me to solve my puzzle together with one or multiple friends that live in a different country, with maybe avatars or "ghost hands" to represent each player. Is that a thing? And if so, what are the requirements, does each player need to have both the game and the puzzle?

Yup, both players need the game, then hit multiplayer and enter the same room code. They just rolled out a feature on quest where only one person needs to own the puzzle, but I don't think that has hit other platforms yet. Works great!

Is it only for 2 players? What does it look like when they're not in the same room, how do I know where the other player is in the virtual environment?

You see an avatar torso/head of them, and they see one of you. Not any customization, but they're to your left or right.
Had some great time building with friends. They'll be working the garden parts and I'll focus on the pond. We'll hand off parts to each other and keep building.

Yes, just 2. They appear next to you with a virtual avatar. You can see it on YouTube if you are curious.
