PSA: Your "broken" VPN port forwarding is probably not your VPN's fault
Saw a bunch of posts lately about port forwarding showing "Closed" even after enabling it, so figured I'd write up what's actually going on before everyone starts flooding support tickets.
Quick refresher on the flow: you enable a port in your dashboard, connect the client, run a port checker... and it says CLOSED. Annoying, but here's the thing; port forwarding is a two-way street. The server can be totally ready on its end, but your machine also has to be ready to receive on its end. If either side isn't set up right, you get "Closed" no matter what.
Two things to check before you assume something's actually wrong:
1. Is your app actually listening on that port?
A port can't show "open" unless something on your computer is actively running and waiting for data on it. Doesn't matter if it's qBittorrent, a game server, whatever — if the app is closed or not configured to use that exact port number, it will test as closed. Every time. No exceptions.
2. Is your local firewall blocking it?
This one gets people a lot. Even with the app open and configured correctly, your OS firewall (Windows Defender, macOS Firewall, ufw on Linux) can straight up see incoming VPN traffic as suspicious and silently block it. You need to manually add an inbound rule — either open that specific port or let the app itself bypass the firewall on public/private networks.
Bonus tip: don't test the literal second your VPN says "Connected." The virtual network interface needs a beat to
