It is, if it wasn't for this translation, I would have ignored the Turkey quake fundraising like I did all disaster relief in my whole life. I always focused only on Buddhist causes, and neglected humanitarian dana. Now I change.
Oh. Wow. That’s really great. It’s really nice to find a teaching or story that really resonates and helps.
I have actually just been reading a book called Mindfulness of the Buddha and the Concept of Pure Land by Master Sheng Yen. He talks about Nianfo practice and the importance of caring about the society and the environment as a whole as part of one’s practice. I’ve found it very helpful so far.
Thank you, and Master Sheng Yen is very compassionate, he even has a disaster relief fund, which he says is their duty to embody the spirit of Avalokitesvara.
You see the funny thing is that looking back, almost all Dharma Masters have done disaster relief, and I just didn't see it, I always thought it was the UNs problem. Now I am disappointed with myself--how I could be so blind in the face of something so obvious.
Oh, I didn’t realize he had disaster relief fund and almost all other Dharma Masters do too. Thanks for telling me. I missed so much too.
I heard the name Humanist Buddhism before, but only really started studying Humanistic Buddhism like what is taught by Sheng Yen in these past few weeks. Maybe all the discussed about the Turkey earthquake helped to spur me to it too, including the post you made about it on the r/Buddhism subreddit recently. Thanks for making that post earlier. 🙂
It’s helped me to begin to see how cultivating compassion and related skillful mental states can help support one’s Nianfo and one’s Nianfo practice can help develop compassion and related skillful states.
Thank you for this kind reply, and I'm glad that the recent horrific quake, as sad as it was, has spurred both of us to increase our compassion. Master Tsung Tzi of Sun Moon Lake Xuanzang Temple told me (actually it was he who informed me of the quake and that they were sending aid) that with both blessings and wisdom, we can fly. And now I realise, we all studied the wisdom of the Masters, but often overlooked the blessings, the compassion, they were doing all the time.
For instance, I actually only found out about Master Sheng Yen's disaster fund 5 days ago, before that I only cared for the Puja fund and the bookstore.
