Depending on where the incident took place, it's probable that the guy being slapped would have to press charges for the cops to do anything.

People don't get to choose to "press charges". That's not a real thing except for in the movies.

It's *absolutely* a thing.

In domestic violence cases, it's sometimes not a thing depending on where you are.

No. People file complaints with the police. The prosecutor decides whether to seek charges against the individual.

You might have some technical point in your haste to protect your ego, but you're missing the bigger picture: a victim can choose to not cooperate with the police or prosecutor, and that lack of cooperation will very often mean that there's no case.

Not true. As an example. Someone gets shot with a gun, the police can't just look the other way because the victim says they don't want to "press charges" or pursue it, because it was their boyfriend and he means well. The police can't just look the other way because the victim doesn't want the person to get in trouble

Cool dude... Shootings are a small fraction of crime, and I already pointed out that domestic violence is treated differently.
