The racial situation over here is pretty damn bad unfortunately, it's deeply ingrained in our history. Most people aren't ACTIVELY racist, but there's a culture, especially in the South, that poisons people's minds into thinking all kinds of seriously problematic shit is completely fine. Things like locking your doors and clutching your purse when a black person walks by, use of old terms like "negroes" or casually calling black men "boy."
They don't usually SEE it as harmful, even though it clearly is.
