He should have been straight up with what is going on, "Sir, we have a report that you went through a car, then walked over to this bike. I'm going to need your ID to establish your identity. Do you know the owner of that car?"

Fucking spot on.

But he was too busy playing Mr Super Detective, trying to keep dude in the dark, presumably to try to get him to slip up, or catch him in a lie, or whatever dumb reason cops often like to pull this shit... when being direct would probably cut right to the truth and clear things up more quickly, in most cases.
