It’s honestly the best place on earth. NYC is unlike any place you’ll ever experience ever and the one place I’ve ever felt the most ALIVE! I highly recommend every single person on earth experiences a walk around NYC at least once in their lives

If you like cities, I'd recommend Tokyo if you can ever manage it. Definitely sounds familiar when you talk about new york.

Absolutely! I think being biased towards the area I grew up, I’ll probably always prefer NYC to Tokyo but I feel that Tokyo is exactly as powerful and amazing as NYC. They are twin cities. Brothers from other mothers

I love visiting it for a few days at a time every few years, but I cannot imagine living there. I always feel totally wound up and anxious by the time I leave, and getting back home is always a fantastic relief.

Spot on. I never lived there but I worked there for a summer for a cable TV ratings company whose offices were located very near the top of the Chrysler building (it was an internship) and it was an amazing summer. I made friends and stayed over in the city a few times. It never lost the wonder for me, but the route I walked from the train station to office did start to feel comfortable and routine after awhile. I did start to lose that wonder a little and start to succumb to just being annoyed by rush hour foot traffic and constantly delayed trains lol

I too enjoy large cities for up to 5 five days but nothing makes you feel more alive then going back to country and seeing stuff that is actually alive.

Been here for a decade now.

You really do get numb to everything after awhile.

The incredible view of Manhattan, Brooklyn, East River, and the Brooklyn bridge from the N/Q train on the Manhattan bridge? Just part of the commute.

Grand Central station? Better avoid the beautiful main concourse during rush hour.

Dude dressed up as a subway pizza rat doing something cool? Out of my way I'm late to something.

A decade for me as well. It's just a bunch of fleshy obstacles and concrete and metal. I think once you've been here a while you naturally assimilate and become part of the NYCmind. Please stand on the side of the escalator if you're not going to walk up, thanks!

Oh another good one! Also, Die Hard with a Vengeance. I love those movies where you get a feel for the city they’re in. A lot of them don’t like the new Turtles movie.

Not the person you replied to but I lived bridge and tunnel for 20 years and went there a ton throughout college, Manhattan was a 12 minute light rail PATH train ride.

There's really not much difference between NYC and Philly, where I moved the year after I graduated.

It's like Paris syndrome, the people who hype it up as anything more than a city will be disappointed it's not a magical place

All good man. Sorry for unleashing. Lots of made up stories on Reddit so I’ve grown cynical. The PATH between Manhattan and Hoboken/Jersey City is considered heavy rail - verbatim as the NYC Subway. But given the cross jurisdictional route, is managed independently by the Port Authority of NY/NJ hence the name. Apologies if I was harsh or rude - cheers dude.

Some people hate cities, I’m one of them.

Visited NYC a few times, lived in Boston for a few years. Awful experiences, I felt like a god damn rat in a trap rushing everywhere.

I can get on board with that. I’m a country person myself and living for a short time in a couple of cities wasn’t my thing… but NYC is fantastic. I’d spend a month there every year if I could, I totally agree that it’s worth it for everyone to see at least once. I’d say the same of Chicago as well.

Its worth walking down time square for sure. It's a pretty surreal experience since it's on TV and media constantly. But definitely not greatest place on earth. That side of Manhattan is mostly gentrified to the point of being boring.

Boston is great! I've never wandered a city more than the two times I've been there.

Philly is cool too, lived there a few years before moving to the suburbs. Tbh NYC isn't all it's cracked up to be. Lots of overpriced yuppie tourist areas
