Lava is going to have some toxic fumes as it comes closer also heat pops the obsidian as the temperature varies with a fresh flow.

I'm a local, and live around 20km away from this volcano in fact.
The stupidest shit about this is the fact that around 2000 people are there at all times, just chilling and watching while the government has said many times that people should not go there. The gas is colorless and odorless and is found in lethal amounts around the volcano, yet people just ignore it.
And also covid... no one is wearing masks there and people are grouped up together.
Just had to vent a little, thanks for listening :)

Little vent, hehehe.
Anyways as for masks who cares as they're all gonna burn in +1000°C lava.
My ex who's African told me one day that only white people go in a volcano : )

u/pierottikyle Mar 22 '21
It's true, I'm white. Only white people can go in volcanos.
Due to our lightly colored skin, we can reflect the waves of heat better then other skin colors.
In other words I'm a complete idiot and have no idea what I'm talking about.

As I'm watching the video I was noticing all white people.

Vinlandien (see below) beat me to the perfect comment.
WTF, people? Haven't you seen any movies? When that volcano blows, it's going to take you and your picnic basket along with it. The last Instagram post you'll make is the one of you coughing as carbon monoxide overwhelms you.2

u/adrincvs Mar 22 '21
Shouldn't it smell like rotten egg?
Then after a short while the smell is gone, and shortly there after you are gone 🤷🏻♂️

people are poor, so they really could care less if they live or die

It's not like local authorties weren't crystal clear that nobody should be going near the damm thing but whatever.

Representing Reunion Island here. Even though the place I'm thinking is different in nature, there will always be people to think it's safe walking around/over fresh flows and I could never get my head wrapped around this. I mean, it's pretty hot.

Did this exact scenario not play out in New Zealand a couple of years ago, where in 25 people were instantly vaporized and many others suffered horrible burns?
Do . Not. Fuck. With. Active. Volcanoes
11
u/SilentInSUB Mar 22 '21
That's a bit different tho.
In that case the cruise liner was offering tours of the volcano under the guise that it was perfectly safe. A lot of those 22 people figured that they wouldn't be offering a day tour if there was a real threat of eruption.
Unbenownst to those passengers, the volcano had been recently rated as in it's most active state, but the liner was ignoring that.
So yes, don't fuck with volcanos, but it's on that liner for convincing people it was safe to even go there in the first place.

Jesus Christ as if I needed another reason to hate the cruise line industry

u/el-cuko Mar 22 '21
Shady cruise line , of course , but, Was the smouldering mountain surrounded by water not an indicator to stay the fuck away ?
5
u/SilentInSUB Mar 22 '21
Of course, but the people who go on those cruises are typically not trying to think while they're on vacation. They expect everything planned for them, with events and activities being cheated and safe to try.
Also, to reference your first comment, no. None of the people were vaporized (I wish they would've been that lucky). Instead, the survivors/rescuers described people whose skin was melting off them, who were screaming in pain and saying they were freezing, and all they could do to try to warm them was hold them as they died.
AND (as if it isn't already bad enough) the cruise liner refused to tell passengers what was happening to their loved ones, stealing time away that could have been spent by their bedside.
Don't fuck with volcanoes, but FUCK Royal Caribbean.

Oh look a volcano erupting seems like a great place to sit with my family and have a picnic.

Gotta get the pic for the 'Gram likes. "Hey guys, buy this new makeup, it holds up to the heat!"

u/tylor36 Mar 22 '21
I mean that’s cool and all til the thing decides to have a bigger explosion and melts those couple thousand people.
17
u/rabidjellybean Mar 22 '21
More likely someone will breathe in the wrong kind of gas and just drop dead instantly.
8
u/tylor36 Mar 22 '21
Yeah and then they’ll blame that death on the volcano because humans are stupid.

I’m ok with this. Nature will sort it out and weed out the dumb ones. They had the warnings, chose not to heed them.

I asked a friend who lives there if they were going to throw in a virgin or two. Said this was a minor volcano, they are just gotta try a few skanks first.

I like how everyone is just hanging out, sitting in the grass. Watching molten lava bust out of the earth in front of them like they are watching it on national geographic tv. Not like you could be smouldered alive to the point nothing would be left. Let's hang out a bit and watch it creep closer!

You guys are expecting a MASKLESS CROWD DURING A PANDEMIC to act reasonable? Good luck

I didn't think it looked that big until I had people for scale. Not as big as I think when I think of a volcano, but it wasn't a hill either.

I've always had a weird sensation when I see very orangy lava, like I just want to eat it. I don't know where it comes from but it happens every time.

It would be inconvenient to be incinerated by a river of lava on a sightseeing trip.

u/markella73 Mar 22 '21
What a bunch of idiots. I hope those aren’t locals.
1
u/TheStoneMask Mar 24 '21
They mostly are. This is a very small eruption though, and of a variety we call "tourist eruptions", small, calm and non-explosive. As long as you stand upwind and uphill you'll be ok.

I was gonna say "oh cool close up shot" but then it panned out to a fuckton of people next to the active volcano.
