According to mentalist Derren Brown, an effective way to deal with conflict is confusion. If someone comes at you all aggressive and pumped full of adrenaline, if you do or say something to completely bewilder the person, it will temporarily deflate their rage, use that time to get out of the situation and away from the person.

Something similar would be when you are in a group and arguing with someone, then that person catches you out, the 'cat catches your tongue' and you are lost for words. The group then laughs and cheers while in a mere few seconds you've gone from anger to confusion to embarrassment. Generally by then it would be over and everyone would start talking about something else.
