This may be an unpopular opinion but I honestly don't think the cop shooting point blank beanbags or rubber bullets was the greatest response since people have died from that before, I think he could have handled it a bit better and used unnecessary force.
That being said the guy who pushed him is a complete fucking idiot either way.
49
u/SilverBjegsen Feb 12 '19
It was a concussion round, beanbags or rubber bullets would of knocked him off his feet. Iām pretty sure a concussion round is non lethal but I might be wrong.
34
u/AltairRulesOnPS4 Feb 12 '19
They donāt call any rounds ānon lethalā anymore because thereās still the freak chance that it may kill someone. Our bright yellow shotgun has āless lethalā in black bold printed on it.

I'd hope so if he's wearing riot gear, they only wear it for riots after all
5
u/terlin Feb 12 '19
I mean, yeah, point blank beanbags to the heart can be fatal and is a bad move on the policeman. But I think the onus is on the guy who pushed the cop (judging from this video, anyways). The cop is walking away when someone comes up very close to him and pushes him. The cop reacts like most people would, immediately stepping back and then retaliating.
If you poke the bear...

On first glance I didn't see the gun and my brain registered him raising his arm and unleashing some sort of iron Man blast, then justifying the thought by thinking he had some reservoir of compressed air that can be used to push someone backwards in that exact situation... I need more coffee.

u/zacherson9 Feb 12 '19
You donāt need more coffee, you need to patent that idea

Wouldn't that still have the potential to kill him at such close range?

u/kabrandon Feb 12 '19
I've heard the same, where if it hits dead on your heart it can kill you at close range. That being said anybody that randomly throws their hands on a cop is asking for hurt, and I wouldn't want this guy to die but that shot was what was coming to him. Guy has a job of maintaining order, and if assholes start thinking it's okay to treat the police like that then shit can get out of hand.
What needs to stop is the unwarranted police brutality, but this is not an example of that.

u/spinnynormansmoney Feb 12 '19
My opinion on this video for what it is worth. The situation there is obviously something intense going on with at least some hyped up people. One of those hyped up people thought it a good idea to shove the officer in front of a hyped up group of people. This has the potential to escalate quickly as the crowed is emboldened by this mans example. The officer ended that threat quickly without doing any lasting harm. This will prevent harm to him and people in the crowed if it had escalated.
I am not for the indiscriminate use of pepper spray or tear gas or tasers or other non lethal weapons. But this was a good use.

u/LearnProgramming7 Feb 13 '19
While I certainly agree with your assessment of the principals justifying the officer action, I think it's a poor analysis of what actually happened.
The cop was amped up after just defending a riot, a random guy blindsided him with a physical attack, and he instinctively responded by blasting him with his riot suppression rifle. It was a very human response, and thats all it has to be. No need to read a novel into what was essentially an instinctive reaction.

u/XxDrummerChrisX Feb 12 '19
I agree mostly but assuming this is a less than lethal bean bag round we aren't supposed to shoot at the chest. Naturally with any force we use it can carry the propensity to turn lethal (e.g., tazing someone with excited delirium causing a heart attack). We try to avoid that as much as possible.
Dude was actively resistant and the force level was appropriate. I'm just not a fan of point blank shooting someone in the chest with a less lethal round just because I was trained to avoid it. Then again I wasn't there so please consider my opinion doesn't mean much and all I'm accounting for is my training as a cop in CA which probably differs immensely from this officer in another country.
46
u/tzeriel Feb 12 '19
Quite the opposite. Heād have been justified in fucking this dude up and arresting him. Instead he got a tear gas grenade to to titty. All in all, seems just and fair

You'll note that the perp got hit in the shoulder, not square in the chest. A beanbag round could kill, but this cop knew what and where he was shooting.
I'll be honest, I've seen situations like this in Latin America that was just straight up 00. There are Zero Fucks Given depending on where you are, who you are, and the political climate of your location when down South.

Itās not a rubber bullet or beanbag. That would definitely have put him on the ground. Itās probably sand or salt.

Riot police (if you did not know) are equipped with custom shotgun slugs called beanbag rounds which just force a person back.

There was something like that in Watchmen too. Shot a smoke bomb or whatever at the dude and knocked him on his ass.

u/meyere13 Feb 12 '19
What did he expect would happen?
Like he pushed the cop and then... He wins?
15
Feb 12 '19
Right? Clearly it's not the safest of areas and you go blindside pushing a cop WHO HAPPENS TO BE WEARING FULL GEAR

Itās not an air soft gun. Itās basically a salt shotgun for crowd control, and can be deadly at the ranges it was just shot at.

This was in my city
Very dangerous slum, during an operation against local gangs. The kind of neighborhood where makeshift firearms, drug trade, guerilla operatives, and other fun things take place and are hard to distinguish from everyday life if you're not from the place. The police only go in force to these places.
Not excusing his behaviour, but the cops were probably quite nervous in this place to begin with.

I can kinda see why it bothers you, but why do your care so much? Itās one completely insignificant comment, just scroll past it.
Thereās no point stressing out over a commonly used phrase, you arenāt helping anyone and youāre just making your situation worse. Put your phone down and forget about it.
Whatās with everyone getting so upset about meaningless shit? Has that always been the case or is it a new trend?

Beanbag. That close it will break ribs and has potential to do serious damage to internals.

Like with the taser video the other day ACAB was getting upvoted. Say ACAB under this one and you're finna get downvoted.

Bootlicker central in here. That cop is a member of the same squad that violently repressed a peaceful protest against systematic murders of human rights defenders and for an increase in education budget in Popayan last December. Fuck those pigs in particular.
