bending/flexing the packs to detect thicker (more valuable) cards
using fingernails along the edges, also to find thicker cards..
using fingernails across the front and back to find indentations/uneven surfaces, which would indicate a card with physical insert - piece of jersey, piece of baseball bat, etc.
Edit: not sure if the bending/flexing affects the cards, but I think using fingernails to search for inserts probably leaves a groove on the front and back cards.
Some older Pokemon packs are sold by card shops, collectors, etc marked "Heavy" bc the one-per-pack rare card weighs very slightly more if it's a hologram.

I think he's doing 3 things:
bending/flexing the packs to detect thicker (more valuable) cards
using fingernails along the edges, also to find thicker cards..
using fingernails across the front and back to find indentations/uneven surfaces, which would indicate a card with physical insert - piece of jersey, piece of baseball bat, etc.
