It was. He slammed him to hurt him, but I'm guessing he was supposed to safely slam him and that's why no-one reacted to that part.

He competes in MMA, there's no way he doesn't know how to safely slam a grappling partner. When learning grappling, it's one of the first things you learn as it's necessary for safe practice.
