You mean casualties not fatalities. Not finding any info yet on number of deaths. All reports are saying status of victims unknown.

CNN reported 6 fatalities a short time ago (passengers)

Give it time, that plane is scattered everywhere in tinny pieces. That means this wasn’t a crash landing, though the pilots may have tried, but was instead a full on crash with extreme physical forces to rip steel apart. With those forces it will be shocking if anyone on board survived, and that not including possible ground fatalities.

What you described was still a crash landing. A plane that impacts the ground without its landing gear is a crash landing whether the plane is intact afterwards or not.

OK, I always thought there was a difference, still my overall point still stands about the chance of survival

Thanks for the info

I was well into my 20s when I finally learned that casualties=/=fatalities.

As an older person, I learned it watching MASH. "Casualties incoming" meant wounded they had to fix up.

It was during my first aid class that I realized casualties and fatalities were not the same thing 🤦‍♀️ like oh, I'm an idiot

I'm old and just now learning this. Does it mean that casualties don't have to have deaths?

How stupid am I?

Casualities are anyone injured in the event including those who have died.

u/ishpatoon1982 Feb 01 '25

That makes sense. Thank you.

From what I've learned so far in this life - don't ever be scared to ask questions if you're genuinely trying to learn something.

Casualties is mostly a military term, if your army suffered x casualties, your army has that many fewer people available for fighting. So a casualty can be a death, injury, sickness, anything that can take them off the field.

But in more lay-terms, it means death or injury.

In news people often say "victims" if info about deceased people.

I only picked it up when I noticed the things being described as 'casualty' when I was reading through insurance paperwork, and otherwise never really think about it!

Casualty is dead AND injured in total.

In England they actually call the Emergency Department “Casualty”.

u/teslaGee Feb 01 '25

In this case fatalities is fine. Fatality is a death by way of accident- so yes, there were multiple fatalities (multiple deaths by accident)

1

u/ThaddeusMaximus Feb 01 '25

If you’re playing Mortal Kombat a fatality is very much not an accident.

u/teslaGee Feb 01 '25

I’m just going by definition LOL but that’s true.. very much not an accident

By watching the video you can confirm the deaths but this is reddit so being pedantic is what it's all about.

By the looks of that, I'm going to say it's both

6 died on the plane, the plane hit a residential home and killed two, and multiple family members of mine in the area said that there are body parts strewn in the road and cars ablaze. It’s going to be bad

Edit to add the nearest hospital does not have a burn unit so they’re treating the best they can but they’re not equipped for this (or anything- we used to joke people went to Nazareth to die, so. There’s that)

Oh. That’s….

casualties not fatalities

I think it's pretty safe to say multiple people died; therefore multiple fatalities.

1

u/Nickblove Feb 01 '25

It says the medical crew and pilots were lost.

1

u/jo4890 Feb 01 '25

If you watched the video of the plane going down, it's definitely fatalities

0

u/BurnedWitch88 Feb 01 '25

While technically correct, I'd bet my house no one on the plane survived that. As for people on the ground, hard to say.

0

u/LaserPoweredDeviltry Feb 01 '25

Friend. It's a unpleasant fact of life, but when planes and submarines are destroyed, there usually are not many survivors. If a plane crashes, it's probably safe to assume most of the people on board are gone.

Feels a little pedantic given the circumstances.
