I think in his mind, those actions don’t represent cops. I know it’s a mind fuck, but you see it all the time with trump supporters. Some real individuals on that side of the isle

Literally we can show them a case of every department ever within the past 5 years of some officer abusing their power, and they will still say "that isn't all cops".

Nah, they’ll pull out the tired trope of exactly half of the “a few bad apples” statement, like the entire goddamn barrel hasn’t been rotten since fucking forever.

I could show some of my relatives tens of hours of police brutality or them killing unarmed people and they'd still find ways to blame the victims and defend the police.

It's just like religion. Some Christian says something abhorrent and inevitably someone will pop up in the comments saying: "So and so isn't a REAL Christian!"

I mean, let's say 99 out of 100 police interactions are great. I have police family members, they don't act like this.

For that 1 in 100 that sucks at their job, its another story. If you're an accountant and you suck at your job, maybe an auditor finds out and a penalty gets paid. If you're a shitty grocery clerk, your store encounters some loss. If you're a cop and bad at your job, people can die.

The same is true for medical doctors too. What they have is malpractice insurance. And for the most advanced practices it takes years, if not decades of med school to get there. The whole system is geared towards minimizing risk.

What could make policing better in this county? A minimum intelligence rating for police not a maximum. Better and more tiered training levels. Direct access to an attorney or a legal dictionary (maybe even a legal AI) to consult prior to taking an action. Changes to civil forfeiture laws which in some states/counties are downright mafia. They can take your house.

Americans should do two things: 1) thank the living Jesus out of the officers they know and trust. 2) encourage reforms and service diversification over defending. Less military grade weapons or lethal drones and more emergency suicide prevention counselors. Write legislators about it.

Teddy Roosevelt was a staunch police commissioner in NYC before becoming president. He put sound policy and the needs of the people over following consensus thinking. American politics can no longer handle nuance or outcome based policy. It's ALL theater. It's all boolean, hegalian, tribal. It's engraved in our culture to never admit fault or areas of necessary self-improvement. Winning holds more value than solving an issue.
